Today my classmate wrote to me. She stayed to live in occupied Mariupol. I don’t condemn these people, I know how hard it is to leave your home, where you grew up and were born, and start life from scratch. It’s really difficult. She always complains to me about the occupation authorities, about the complete arbitrariness that is happening in the city, although I always ask her not to speak out so that it doesn’t threaten her safety. And to this day she doesn’t understand why they came here, just like I do. We remembered how we used to live well and how we didn’t appreciate it. Before, my only problem was the renovation of the apartment, I was always missing something, whether it was new serving dishes, which I had a lot of, there was no place to put them, or a new TV that had just gone on sale. Life was really carefree and easy then, there were plans for months ahead. And now I can't plan anything for a week of life, because it's unclear whether we'll wake up tomorrow at all and it's unknown what might happen. I still can't comprehend the full scale of the tragedy that happened. It still seems to me that I fell asleep on February 23, 2022 and am still sleeping. Although my housing survived, in Mariupol I had a two-room apartment, there were only brokens windows and little things like broken chandeliers from the shock wave, or broken tiles on the kitchen walls - but the house survived. Having taken the lives of thousands of my fellow countrymen, destroying our city - that wasn't enough for them. Now they have reached housing in which no one lives and my apartment is to become the property of the so-called "dnr", if I don't come and show the documents for the apartment, which of course I'm never going to do... it will simply be taken away and sold to some russian….or even worse, they will hand him over to some murderer for "liberating Mariupol." I'm at a loss for words. What an absurdity. Who do we live with on this planet.

There is no neutrality in the face of evil. The russian war and genocide against Ukrainians have changed me. russians have killed three of my friends. They have beheaded, tortured, raped, and castrated thousands of my countrymen. They have destroyed the livelihoods of millions. I used to be much more tolerant and accepting of different points of view. But now my vision is more black and white. The war has become personal. The pain has become personal. When your family and friends are bombed every night for four years and your country is invaded, it becomes personal. I think every one of us has lost someone, either on the battlefield or when rockets or Iranian drones struck civilian infrastructure. Every day and night, there are explosions in the sky. You start your day reading reports about people hospitalized or killed because russian rockets destroyed civilian buildings. And one of those buildings could be where your loved ones or friends live. So when I meet someone who claims to be neutral regarding the russian war and genocide against the Ukrainian people, I hold them morally responsible for the atrocities committed by russians. There can be no neutrality in the face of evil. If you choose to remain neutral and silent, that is your choice. But that choice defines who you are. You are a coward, a silent supporter, and history will judge you as such. To conclude, I want to quote a few people who understood well that there is no neutrality in the face of evil: Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil; God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” Elie Wiesel: “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
