Many people who see this leak will only focus on one thing:
Apple is testing a 7-inch screen — wow, 7 inches is so big.
But what I want to analyze is what it truly means behind the scenes.
Let’s do the math.
The current iPhone 17 Pro Max (and the expected iPhone 18 Pro Max) has a screen size of approximately 6.9 inches with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
After calculation:
Screen width ≈ 73.44 mm
Screen height ≈ 159.30 mm
The current left and right bezels are about 1.15 mm.
Now, if the future iPhone 20 Pro Max increases to 7.0 inches while maintaining the same 19.5:9 ratio:
Screen width ≈ 74.51 mm
Screen height ≈ 161.62 mm
Here’s the most critical point:
The overall screen width only increases by about 1.07 mm. Split between both sides, that’s just 0.54 mm per side.
And remember, the iPhone 20 Pro Max is rumored to feature a true borderless design.
This means that as long as Apple narrows the left and right bezels by more than 0.54 mm, the added screen width will be completely offset.
In other words, the likely outcome is:
The screen approaches 7 inches, but the overall device width remains almost unchanged — or could even become slightly narrower.
So, the in-hand feel won’t get worse due to a wider body. Combined with the four micro-curved glass design, it may actually feel even more comfortable than today’s models.
This also explains why truly excellent flagships haven’t easily moved to 7 inches for so many years.
If you simply widen the body without controlling the bezels, the grip experience will definitely decline — and Apple clearly won’t accept that kind of compromise.
What truly enables a 7-inch flagship is not a larger body, but the space freed up by ultra-narrow bezels, more advanced screen encapsulation technology, and designs like four micro-curved edges working together.
So next time you see a brand pushing its flagship toward 7 inches, try analyzing it from this perspective.
What they’ve really upgraded is likely not the screen size itself, but bezel technology.
