@BenJohnson2018 I want a little bit of your 2026 mojo, my friend.
English

@AJLinnemeyer @rrreadsbooks I hope you love it as much as I do.
English

@GarethMeadows @rrreadsbooks I’m really excited!
English

I need a new tv show. what are we watching? #WritingCommunity
English

@rrreadsbooks Depends what you’re into. Just finished Pluribus – compellingly original. Currently late to the party with watching Shogun, which is both beautiful and tragic. Love it!
English

@AJLinnemeyer @rrreadsbooks Great choices! Oh, and Arcane is outstanding.
English

@rrreadsbooks Right now I’m watching both Fallout and Nobody Wants This. Apple TV has a bunch of excellent ones if you like sci-fi. Arcane is up next, which I’ve heard good things about

@pennpaperplanes Amen, Amanda.
The past 18 months, I’ve just focused on this. Nothing else.
Feel like I’ve turned a corner. My writing has clicked. And still so much to learn and improvements to make!
Writing is both an art and a craft – development is iterative, not immediate.

@GarethMeadows A lot more different than I anticipated, to be honest, but quite the adventure.

NOVEL UPDATE:
I have 4 chapters now, but it's been a real learning experience because the level of detail and exposition in a novel is so much more. I'm used to writing lean so for screenplays, so I have to keep reminding myself that with a movie, people can just see what something is and it's visual context, but in a novel I have to provide that detail through description and sometimes exposition.

@kimhornsby Love this, Kim! Keep up the good work – love seeing screenwriters going from strength-to-strength.

Home from the American Film Market where movies are bought & sold in LA
I have thoughts so buckle up if you want to take this ride:
Overwhelming first day - Noise, crowds, stimulus, getting the lay of the land
Realized all the meetings I couldn't get with production companies by email, I still couldn't get by crashing their suites upstairs at the door. Lionsgate, A24, Neon, The Asylum - forget it.
BUT, I had some conversations with gatekeepers, kept dropping by & ended up meeting with two Horror Distributors about films we have ready to go
A lovely assistant named Keeley slipped me in to pitch her boss, a guy named Kyle told me to email his boss & say I'm a friend of @LukeBarnett of Teacher's Pet, & I was told to come back Saturday at a 3rd place to line up for a meeting. I got in, met a producer whose mom lives one island over from me. He wants to see the films and also talked to me about Xmas movies.
Met with another company wanting to bump up their Xmas slate who liked me and wants a follow up this week.
But some of the best moments were chance encounters like showing a guy on the street how to get to the hotel (I might adapt a book he optioned), sharing an Uber with the organizer of the EFM in Berlin, sitting with studio owners in Vancouver, schmoozing at Indie Rights' taco party, connecting with social media friends IRL, meeting an incredible actress who's life story I might co write, grabbing a quick bite with 2 women in film who I know I'll work with next year, meeting a cool lady director
@RBwalksintoabar was eloquent/giving as always, @stevenmartini schmoozed around with his movie Bittersweet, @TahhanSolo dropped in to wow us with his career trajectory, @cathylynnyonek was making deals and taking names, @erichcannon was working the room with his slate for Compassionate Disaster, @CedricGegel captivated like the leading man he is, Felicity, Shayna and Craig from @NetworkISA hosted a fun party after their panel (where I was asked to pitch a room of 300 people) and I met a ton of filmmakers with incredible projects looking for funding
I even had my very own Meet Cute & ran into him again at the bar on the final night. Thanks to Amanda Toney of @Stage32 who was my wing woman singing my praises like we were pitching him a movie. A Rom Com.
I was brave in all respects last week. I put myself out there and left no stone unturned.
AFM was about networking, having biz cards ready, trailers cued up, being friendly, collecting info &, today, doing the follow up
Was it worth it?
For me, it was. I'll be back AFM!

@CindyBegel Great question! I’m sure there are many: Ridley Scott, Peter Nowalk, Joe Barton & Brett Goldstein spring to mind. John Green & Philip Pullman in lit. Not leading, but the Coen brothers write badass women.
Wonderful too to see so many brilliant women writers showing how it’s done
English

@GarethMeadows I like that! There are men that liked to write strong women like Jim Brooks. Are there any male writers that we presently look at for writing strong women?
English

@CindyBegel I grew up with strong women. I married one. Our daughter is a strong woman. They’re all around us, but are fiendishly underrepresented on screen. That wrong should be put right.
English

@GarethMeadows I love men write strong women characters, Gareth!
English

@akatepockett Well done, Kate - great achievement! Scream it from the rooftops!
