Today marks the start of Youth Citizens Police Academy Class 12! This program builds lasting relationships between Garland Police officers and Garland ISD students. Over the next seven weeks, students will learn from various units within the department and participate in hands-on scenarios to better understand law enforcement and the roles of police officers, dispatchers, forensic investigators, detectives, and specialized units. We share their same excitement and welcome them to the PD!

*Garland Police Increasing DWI Patrols Over Spring Break Holiday* Garland Police will increase Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) patrols beginning Friday, March 6, through Sunday, March 22, 2026, as part of a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant program targeting impaired driving. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 1,083 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in Texas in 2024. Impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of traffic deaths across the state. During the enforcement period, officers will focus on nighttime hours using both marked and unmarked patrol vehicles to identify and remove impaired drivers from the roadway. A first-time DWI conviction in Texas can result in: • Fines up to $2,000 • Driver’s license suspension for up to one year • Up to 180 days in jail Beyond court penalties, the financial impact of a DWI arrest can exceed $17,000 when factoring in legal fees, bond costs, court-ordered classes, ignition interlock requirements, and increased insurance rates. Garland Police encourage residents and visitors to plan ahead: • Designate a sober driver • Use a rideshare service • Call a taxi • Stay where you are Impaired driving is 100% preventable. Make a plan before the celebration begins. #DriveLikeATexan

Last week, our Citizen Police Academy Class had the opportunity to hear from our Bomb Unit and SWAT Team. Class members received an in-depth look at the equipment, training, and real-world operations these teams handle. The presentations were hands-on, informative, and eye-opening. What many people don’t see is the level of preparation, discipline, and teamwork required for these units to operate safely and effectively. Our SWAT and Bomb Unit personnel took time to answer questions, demonstrate equipment, and explain not just what they do, but why they do it. Thank you to all of the team members who invested their time into educating and engaging with our class. We are proud to have such highly trained professionals serving our city! What an incredible night for our Garland Citizen Police Academy class. First, the class toured the Garland Police Boxing Gym and meet some truly inspiring kids and dedicated coaches who are making a difference every single day. We were also honored to spend time with GREAT Police Officer Hall of Fame inductee, retired Garland Lieutenant Dave Swavey. His leadership and legacy continue to impact our community. Later in the evening, we heard from our Neighborhood Police Officers and learned how they build relationships and strengthen partnerships. Our Homeless Liaison Officers provided insight into the work they do every day. We also received an in-depth presentation from our Narcotics Unit about the challenges they face and the work being done to keep our community safe. Are you interested in joining our next CPA class? Yesterday, February 15th, was School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, and we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible work our SROs do every single day in @gisdnews . These officers go far beyond the badge. They serve as mentors, role models, counselors, and coaches building relationships that make a lasting impact on students and staff alike. Their presence helps keep schools safe, but their influence goes much deeper. Thank you to our SROs for showing up, investing in our youth, and representing Garland PD with professionalism and heart. Keep up the great work as we finish up another school year strong! #SROAppreciation

**Driver Critically Injured in Crash; Firefighters Pull Occupant from Burning Car** Garland Police traffic investigators are investigating a serious crash in the 6200 block of N. Shiloh Road that left one person critically injured. Just after 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, Garland Fire Department Engine 6 crews were on their way to another call when they came upon a single-vehicle crash involving a car that had struck a utility pole and caught fire with the driver still inside. Firefighters immediately stopped, were able to remove the driver from the burning vehicle, and extinguished the fire. The driver, and sole occupant, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where they remain in critical condition. No firefighters were injured. The investigation remains ongoing, but preliminary information indicates that speed may have been a factor.

Today we were proud to take part in a SkillsUSA regional event alongside Garland ISD, the Allen Police Department, and the Garland City Police Academy Alumni Association. More than 350 students from across Texas participated in a first responder skills competition, where they were evaluated and scored on real-world scenarios and performance. SkillsUSA helps prepare students for careers in skilled trades and public service by combining hands-on skills with professionalism and leadership. Today was a great example of that mission in action. It was a fun experience and everyone had a great time! We can’t wait for next year!

Tonight, our Citizen Police Academy participants heard from one of our Communications Supervisors, learning how our 9-1-1 system works and how dispatchers serve as the critical first link in emergency response. Later, participants heard from one of our Youth Crimes Detectives who specializes in Internet Crimes Against Children. He shared insight from a major case he worked and provided practical ways parents can help keep kids safe online. Including staying involved, having open conversations, and reminding children never to communicate with strangers online. Why do we do what we do, and how do we do it? Come find out by joining a future Citizen Police Academy class. Apply here: garlandtx.gov/DocumentCenter…

WEATHER ALERT: Road Closure Naaman Forest Blvd (between Brand Rd and Lavon Dr) is currently impassable due to ice and has been closed for safety. Please use alternate routes. While there was some melting today, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing overnight. That means water on the road can refreeze quickly, creating black ice and even more hazardous conditions. Even if the road looks dry, patches of ice may be present. If you must drive this evening… Slow down and use extreme caution. If you can stay home, please do. Stay safe.
