If there were any “correct” reading of sad story of Henry as a parable and not a literalist horror story, it would rely on an understanding of human parenting and how putting a kid in time out for being selfish is only temporary until they’re willing to work with others again

Wilbert might not admit it, but the reason his books were as successful as they were was because parents could use their “lessons” to teach kids “human morals”. Because that’s what they’re based on! Locomotives don’t know what lies are. They don’t know what being selfish means.

To write the characters with full understanding is to grapple with what that contradiction means, and if you don’t even try you have failed just as greatly as the second guy to pick up the torch did when he tried to write machines as they were.

They talk like people because Wilbert put human-ish faces on them because he was trying to translate a trains’ logic into our language. A passenger trains’ job is to be speedy, so they’re impatient, etc. But a train doesn’t want to go fishing, a human does.

See I agree about them not being analogous to people and all but as a “passion project of one guy” enjoyer what sets Wilbert apart from fanon is the fact that he based them on the personalities not only of machines, but the drivers, workmen, and even local kids-the humans-he knew

Speaks to a fundamental misunderstanding of the series a lot of people (esp younger ppl who approach this as a Fandom™️ first and a passion project of 1 man second) the engines are not People. They do not think or have the morals of People. If you write like they do, you failed.

BoCo and Trevor are not friends with each other, they only just tolerate their company. Rebecca would likely find Molly very tiring to be around. It's all petty. Thomas is a workplace comedy.

I like giving characters random-ass one-sided beef. Even the nice characters. Edward doesn't like Toby because Toby keeps calling him 'old' - which he takes personally. Henry doesn't like Salty because he finds the whole salty-dog-sailor thing tiresome.
