Hobbiton was intentionally built nearly a year before filming began so it would feel like a real, lived-in village rather than a movie set. Real vegetable gardens were planted, fences were weathered naturally, and weeds were allowed to grow through the pathways. The production even used sheep to keep the grass trimmed to the perfect length. Peter Jackson wanted audiences to feel like hobbits had genuinely lived there for generations, and it worked.
