Hi Dan, Really appreciate the depth of your response and the openness. Your point around shared mental frameworks across coaches, staff and players is key. When a common language exists, those moments of reflection in meetings can move from awkward silence to genuine collective sense-making. The idea of radical transparency is fascinating too. Difficult to embed, but when the environment is psychologically safe and the framework is understood, it can shift conversations from blame to shared responsibility. Great insights — and I look forward to reading the book.👍🏻

Hi Garry. Thanks so much for this message. I appreciate you taking the time to send some respectful checks and challenges through. I really enjoyed reading your thoughts. I recognise the specific challenges you highlight…they speak to the theme of my piece. Teams and organisations require mental frameworks that are shared across coaches, staff, and players to enhance group conversations; for better (more accurate) sense-making; and for the implementation of shared solutions. It’s long been my opinion that we in psychology haven’t communicated our wares effectively enough, especially around performance psychology. Performance psychology is a discipline (like sport science) that everyone should be all-in on (unlike mental health strategies that should be more private, personal, and confidential). We haven’t been good enough at helping organisations and coaches normalise performance psychology. The very fact these meetings tend to be awkward, with players somewhat mute (and I’ve been in plenty of them over the years), speaks to how much we in sport psychology haven’t been good enough for coaches and players. I now honestly believe that radical transparency (see the work of Ray Dalio) will offer huge performance gains for sporting organisations competing at the elite level. By that I means being all-in on a competitive mental framework that evokes discussion and solutions across a team (coach-led; player-driven; system-supported). Now, don’t misunderstand me - this is enormously hard to do and impossible to perfect. People are people (complex)…but that doesn’t mean you don’t try. I guess my best case study of this was with Arne at Feyenoord (but even then, I would give us 4/10 for how far we got with it). In summary, I would have loved Spurs to have had a shared mental model around competitive psychology with radical transparency in this room (it’s clear they don’t). I would have loved Harry to have been able to say: “We’re not in our High Performance Mindset there…and it’s something we’re practicing daily. It’s not good enough. We need a higher intent to win the duel there. We’ve been leading on this for weeks. We have session designs to drive this. Come on guys, let’s talk more about how we do this better.” Informed players, guided by coaches…driven by leaders…attuned to the competitive mental framework (and not just the game model). All of this meets your final point outlined in your last paragraph. To enhance communication, to challenge effectively, and support players…organisations are best served having mental frameworks that are normalised, shared, coach-led, player-driven, and system-supported. I appreciate the discourse and your expertise in this area 👍🏻

“I don’t understand” says the great Harry Kane, in this clip from the Spurs Prime series while Jose Mourinho was manager. “I don’t know if it’s laziness…” Perhaps it was…perhaps it wasn’t…but it’s darn hard to sense-make without mental frameworks to analyse the situation. There are three mental skills constantly mediating action-execution as the game plays out… Attention Intensity Intent Jose Mourinho and club captain, Harry Kane, exasperated because of potential: Low attention - players distracted and disconnected Poor intensity - players disengaged…weak alertness and readiness Low intent - energy-back…hesitancy, inhibition, passiveness “I don’t understand…” Because the sense-making tools aren’t there. Because without a competitive mental framework, the ability to understand what’s happening (or get as close to understanding as possible) is unlikely. This is why ambitious organisations need mental frameworks to underpin what they see on the pitch. “I don’t understand” And perhaps they never will. Perhaps they never will…perhaps, maybe they never will… (𝐌𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤, 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐞, 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝟒𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭)
