One of the dangers of the NATO members refusing to protect the oil routes is that the biggest losers from the potential US destruction of the terminals besides the IRGC and the regime is China, If they send their navy in, this mess takes on a whole new dimension

Sad to hear of the passing of Phil Woolas, he was one of the first national politicians I engaged seriously with after I realised London (through Westminster and Whitehall)would make a bigger difference to the lives of the people in South Holland than we could alone on the ground

@MichaelLCrick @michaelgove Good strategic leaders make sure they have a local infrastructure in place to make sure their voting public get a better local service, than they would do than if they were the sole public servant available to them. It’s not either or.

Absolutely correct. I always ask people who insist MPs should be "local", to list their political heroes. So, I ask, how many of them were local MPs? Which is a variation of William Hague's point. If you insist every MP has to be local, you don't give aspirants many options.

@robprogressive @sharrond62 You’re not alone, I always pay them with cash. We should all fight back against those who promote a cashless society, it leaves our country more vulnerable, to incompetence and to malevolence, it also leaves companies free to deliver a rubbish service.

I took a taxi in London recently. I handed the driver cash, because I resist a cashless society. She looked relieved & said, “Thank you. Card fees cost me 5%.” She pointed to a sign: “We prefer cash.” Then she told me that the London regulators keep forcing her to take the sign down. They’ve even threatened to revoke her license. But she keeps putting it back up. The real truth is these extortionate fees are the real reason banks want a cashless society. And once there’s no cash what’s stopping them from raising fees to 10%... or more? Cash = freedom. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. So Resist. Pay in cash. Support small businesses. Before it’s too late

@RoyalMail is there a 30min delay in handling complaints calls because you are overloaded with complaints? Or because all of your equipment is as bad as your website? It thinks an 11 digit phone number is less than 9 digits, cant make a complaint because of it.

I was lucky enough to do nearly 22 years in front line politics (until the electorate said bugger off in 2023) and I was lucky enough to Lear an important lesson quickly. If you want to win most of the time, you have to learn how to lose some of the time

Had a bit of a shock. Only just discovered, after 55 years of believing otherwise, that in Trumpton, Barney McGrew is in fact ONE fireman not two ... Barney and McGrew. I've had to sit down.

Got some really sad news to share with my friends in and around South Holland, Howard Johnson (a long standing ex member of my ex cabinet ) passed away last night, at least it was peacefully in a chair at home watching the TV.

Possibly the future MP for Doncaster North parks his British car, next to a British flag, in the car park of his British pub. 😎🇬🇧

@dc_lawrence @WeAreBrightBlue Or which ones put up inflation and interest rates and stunt growth that way. There are no ‘good’ taxes, the best way to reduce the gap is cut out waste and we all know there is a load of that in every sector.

4. Which taxes hurt growth least? The UK faces a £20-40bn fiscal gap. Filling this means raising taxes, but not all taxes hit growth the same. Our experts favoured consumption taxes (esp. “sin taxes”, fuel & aviation, VAT). They said to reduce stamp duties & NICs to help growth

Anyone introducing the tax, should first have a look at the impact it has on the tips received by the hardworking staff in the service sectors that make tourism a viable business in some places in the first place, just been somewhere where the staff took the brunt of the cost.
Joe Rich@joerichlaw

BREAKING: Labour Devolution minister Miatta Fahnbulleh says the Housing Department is pushing for tourist taxes and ‘putting a very good case … They’re not going to get a rejection from MHCLG. It’s a question of persuading the Treasury’ (@GuidoFawkes) order-order.com/2025/09/29/exc…

🚙 ✈️ Appointment as Shadow Transport Secretary ⛴️ 🚊 It is an honour to have been appointed Shadow Transport Secretary. I will work to drive forward the kind of changes that really make a difference for drivers, rail users and passengers and also for our commercial aviation, logistics, haulage and shipping sectors. As a backbencher I fought against and won a reversal of a Road Tax increase. As Roads and Local Transport Minister in the last @Conservatives Government, I extended the £2 bus fare cap and helped ensure it was a clear Conservative manifesto commitment. A commitment Labour did not match as they abandoned the policy in Government. Drivers, passengers and the whole transport sector have a Conservative Team who are on their side and who will always put them and what works first. Time and again, this Government has shown that it puts ideology and party politics ahead of what actually helps passengers. Under my brief, I will work with fellow Conservative MPs to push for reliable, affordable, joined‑up transport that genuinely serves people’s lives and local communities. Ahead of the next election I will also hold the Government’s decisions to account on every aspect of transport policy for the U.K. and internationally. I am looking forward to getting stuck in!
