Dear Oluwaseun,
Thank you for your feedback. I celebrate and to an extent, join in on Ramadan fast (in solidarity with Muslims, not that I am a Muslim), because this is part of their faith, as handed down to them by prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, as he himself received them from an angel he believed to be Gabriel (Jibril in Arabic).
Ramadan is specifically mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185).
I make a public vow to pay you, Oluwaseun, ₦1 million if you can show me where Ash Wednesday or Lent is mentioned in any book you consider holy.
My question to you, Oluwaseun, is this: from where did you get Ash Wednesday? Certainly not from the Jewish Tanakh, or the Christian Gospels.
If you cannot show me these festivals in your holy books, then it is either that you don't believe those books are holy, and therefore to be followed to the letter as commandments from God, or you do not understand what the word 'holy' means.
Ash Wednesday, just like other festivals in Christendom, is a European invention of men. In other words, they are traditions, no superior or better than any Ifá or Ìṣẹ̀ṣe custom. In fact, Ifá is more valuable to me personally than Ash Wednesday or Lent! I believe in Ifá. I DON'T believe in Ash Wednesday!
Now, that does not mean that I condemn these events. I don't. However, I do not participate in them. To me, they are cultural practices, not religious obligations.
Now, if these cultural practices had originated from a Black African culture, I would gladly participate in them because I am a pan-Africanist.
However, I will not impose upon myself European culture passed off as Christian doctrine. That is fraud, and observing them would be, specifically for me, an exercise in mental laziness.
Having said that, I respect those who elect to go that route, and I do not make any judgments or comments on their choices, except where they ask me pointed questions, as you have just done, in which case I will answer if I am thus inclined.
Thanks again, and may God bless you, Oluwaseun.

How Different Do You Think You Are, As a Christian, From Jews and Muslims?
If, like I do, you ever read the Jewish Scriptures (what we erroneously call the Old Testament, a term that was only coined two hundred years after Yeshua, AKA, Jesus, died), and you also read the Quran in Arabic (which I try to do, my wife being fluent in Arabic), your perspective on religion and interfaith understanding will change.
However, it is hard to get that point of view if you read Scripture, especially the Jewish Torah, in a translation, such as an English or other European-language Bible.
In my opinion, the Quran is more congruent to the Jewish Torah than the European translations of the New Testament.
First of all, Yeshua (Jesus) did not use or even believe in the terms Old Testament and New Testament. He said so himself.
He said:
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them.” - Matthew 5:17.
He then went on to say:
"For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” - Matthew 5:18.
If Yeshua did not abolish "the Law or the Prophets,” then who is that person who should term them the Old Testament?
In reading the Jewish Scriptures, you see words, terms, and phrases that you do not see elsewhere except in the Quran.
For example, one of the most common words in the Hebrew Scriptures is Ma-’aḵ, meaning angel. You find that same word in the Quran unchanged as Ma-’aḵ.
You see it in Numbers 22:22, as well as in 213 other verses, in the Quran 32:11, and in over 80 other ayats.
This is the word that many languages that borrow from Arabic, such as Swahili and Hausa, know as Malaika.
Another word you find in both Scriptures, as the most commonly used term, is Yom or Yowm in the Torah and Yawm in the Quran.
Yom is used in Genesis 1:5 and tens of other verses in the Jewish sacred texts and in the Quran 19:39 and many other Surahs.
They are pronounced exactly the same way, and one is the Hebrew word for day while the other is the Arabic equivalent.
Another term used in both works is the word Bayt, or Bet, meaning 'house'. For example, when you read of such towns as Bethesda, Bethany, or Bethlehem, etc., it is referring to a House of so and so.
For example, Bethlehem simply means House of Bread, Bethesda means House of Mercy, while Bethesda means House of Fishermen.
In the Quran, Bait or Beit is used for 'House,' as seen in the Quran 2:125.
And then there is the word for Prophet, which in Jewish Scriptures is Navi and in the Quran is Nabi. In fact, some Hebrew texts actually use the term Nabi, which means the same thing in Arabic.
For example, in Genesis 20:7, Abraham is referred to as a Nabi in the original Hebrew, and in Quran 33:40, the same word is used for Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.
Do not confuse Nabi for Rasul. Nabi means prophet in Arabic, and Rasul means messenger.
For example, Yeshua is a Rasul sent to the people of Israel. We see this in Matthew 15:24:
“I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
And there are many such words and terms like the above, including Shalom (Hebrew for peace) and Salaam (its Arabic equivalent), Ben (son of in Hebrew) and Ibn (Arabic equivalent). Ibn is pronounced Ibin.
Others will be Aleichem (to you) and Alaykum (same thing in Arabic).
In Arabic, Ethiopia is known as Al-Habasha. Ethiopians themselves do not refer to their country as Ethiopia. They call it Habesha. In the Hebrew Bible, Ethiopia is known as Sheba, as seen in 1 Kings 10:1.
So, what's the point in all of this?
The moral of the story is that both Judaism and Islam, and Hebrew and Arabic, are more similar than you think.
In terms of closeness, Judaism is closer to Islam than it is to Christianity. And all of them have the same Abrahamic roots.

Yesterday morning, after a condolence visit to the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, I tried to be in Daura, Katsina State to attend the burial of our late President Muhammadu Buhari, but all my efforts proved abortive, due to the logistical challenge beyond my control.
I immediately sent a message to a member of late President Buhari’s family explaining my situation. He graciously replied that it was quite understandable, and I made a promise to come today.
Today, accompanied by Senators Ireti Kingibe, Okey Ezea, and Obidient National Coordinator Dr. Tanko Yunusa, I was in Daura with Vice President Shettima, Former Vice President Atiku, Senate President Akpabio, Governor Radda of Katsina, Governor Zulum of Borno State, and many other dignitaries, to pay our last respects to the late President Muhammadu Buhari and to console his family.
I recall vividly meeting with President Buhari in 2022 during my campaign. He said to me: “Peter, you seem to be everywhere and loved by the people. And I wish you the best, please, if you win, do not forget the poor.”
That moment has been the thought I have had since the news of his demise. His concern for the poor should remain a reminder to us all.
May the Almighty God, who has called both our late President and the Awujale of Ijebuland to eternal rest, grant them peace, and comfort their families and indeed our dear nation, as their passing is a deep loss to Nigeria. May their legacies of service and dignity never be forgotten. -PO
