To no one's surprise, every review from a non-Star Wars fan account is calling the Mandalorian and Grogu out for what the marketing has suggested for almost a year: This movie is a few episodes of the series stitched together. Apparently there's no narrative tissue that even connects it to the three Seasons of the series; its a strategic move through and through, testing the waters for Star Wars on the big screen after 7 years of absence and allowing everyone to see it, even those who never got past the first episode of the series. I'm fine with watching an Indiana Jones style space adventure and considering the terrible writing of the third Season, it might be for the better that there is no bigger plot here that connects to the series. But I can't help but think the same thing I thought when this movie was announced: Why? Why play it this safe and boring for your return to the big screen? You are STAR WARS. The most groundbreaking movie franchise in history. Why does your movie feel like a TV show? Why does it look like a TV show? These early reviews help to keep my low expectations even further in check. I still find it a very bleak situation and it's sad that I HAVE to root for this film's success at the box office, because only through big, very succesful flagship projects like this one can we even dream of getting something more niche like Andor again.

After seeing reviews here is my gut reaction… Anyone who goes into #TheMandalorianandGrogu looking to have fun watching a new #StarWars movie, is going to have a blast. Anyone who goes into it hoping for galaxy shattering implications with extensive exploration of Star Wars lore and cameos from major characters that change everything you know about the future of the franchise will walk away terribly disappointed. And none of that should surprise anyone who has an ounce of perspective coming into this release.

The Mandalorian and Grogu: the marketing had me worried, but this movie is actually a lot of fun. Yes it does feel like a supersized high budget few episodes of the tv show - more of an adventure of the week than a huge galactic event story. If you like the show you’ll love this. If you didn’t, you probably won’t. The Anzellans steal the show.

STAR WARS is back on the big screen and #TheMandalorianAndGrogu is a thrilling adventure full of big fights, gnarly creatures and plenty of adorable Grogu moments. It’s less about the lore and more a fun, freaky romp across the galaxy. I really dug that about it. Also really dug Ludwig Göransson’s score, especially the parts that felt like an homage to ‘80s synth-driven horror and action thrillers. Martin Scorsese’s brief role is a big scene stealer, as are the Anzellans. It reminded me how fun #StarWars can be when it stops worrying about canon homework and just cuts loose. Treat it like a pulpy Saturday matinee ride and you’ll have a blast.
