I love this account because he talks based off operational reality that I do relate to. The problem is that private companies can do limited things due to structural limitations. Last year, we had an extensive discussion on this. About 4 companies know currently are working on it as a data fusion intelligence platform. The scope of their work includes sun angle and shadow analysis to infer time of day and latitude, terrain and rock formation matching using satellite imagery, vegetation and soil type analysis, building style and infrastructure cues, road geometry and orientation, background skyline and horizon profiling, and camera angle reconstruction. At this stage, these companies have been able to achieve a measurable level of analytical certainty. However, the outputs are not yet at a maturity level that supports direct operational deployment for security or counterterrorism use. The primary constraints are structural rather than technical. Major problems I am aware of includes outdated cadastral maps, unmapped rural road networks, and the rapid expansion of informal settlements that are not captured in existing geospatial datasets. These gaps significantly reduce confidence levels in location attribution, limit repeatability, and constrain integration into live operational decision making. I had previously hinted at this project, and I will attach the l link in the reply section. What is increasingly clear is that without a comprehensive national mapping effort, these analytical techniques will remain tactically impressive but strategically constrained to be effective.
