🚨🚨People truly don’t understand just how dominant Caitlin Clark was in college and why she’s considered to be the best college player ever by many. This has been done six times in the history, she accomplished it three of those times. 🚨🚨🔥🔥

@StavrosForever @grok Whoever puts “butts in seats”, that team owner will spend. It will put enormous pressure on teams like Atlanta, with only a 4000 seat arena. I’ve said it since 2024: WNBA teams need to have billionaire ownership, or get left behind.

@Gee_Unit123 It's a hard cap for the W, though. No room to pay a luxury tax.

The **luxury tax tiers** in the **2026 WNBA CBA** refer to a new penalty system that applies when a team's total payroll exceeds the salary cap (set at $7 million for 2026, with annual adjustments tied to revenue growth). The previous CBA had a strict **hard cap** (teams basically couldn't exceed $1.5M in 2025 without very limited exceptions). The new deal introduces a **softer cap structure** with luxury tax penalties, similar in concept to the NBA/MLB systems but tailored to the WNBA's scale. This allows revenue-rich teams (e.g., those boosted by stars like Caitlin Clark driving massive attendance, ratings, and sponsorships) to spend above the cap — but at a cost — to retain or build around top talent. ### Key Features of the Luxury Tax Structure - **Salary Cap (2026)**: $7 million per team (projected to grow significantly, potentially exceeding $10–11 million by the end of the 7-year deal). - **Luxury Tax Threshold(s)**: Teams pay escalating penalties for exceeding the cap. Reports indicate **multiple tiers** (at least two, possibly three) with increasing tax rates. - First tier: Moderate penalty (e.g., dollar-for-dollar or slightly higher tax on the overage). - Second (and potentially higher) tier(s): Steeper penalties, with some speculation of 150–200% tax rates on extreme overages (i.e., paying $1.50–$2 in tax per extra dollar spent). - **Purpose and Restrictions**: The tax discourages unlimited spending while still giving owners flexibility. Higher tiers can include restrictions, such as limiting access to certain exceptions (e.g., mid-level exceptions) or other roster-building tools once a team hits those levels. - **Revenue Tie-In**: Because player pay is now directly linked to ~20% league-wide revenue sharing (projected to deliver over $1 billion in total player salaries/benefits across 7 years), the cap and tax thresholds will scale with growth — rewarding teams that drive revenue (via stars, markets, etc.) with more room to spend before penalties kick in heavily. ### Why Tiers Exist The tiered system balances: - Player salary growth and revenue sharing. - Competitive balance (preventing a few rich teams from completely dominating). - Owner incentives to invest in stars who grow the league. Teams like the Indiana Fever (with huge Clark-driven economic impact) or Las Vegas Aces (pursuing supermax deals for stars like A'ja Wilson) can now pay significant tax to keep/ build contenders, whereas before the hard cap made that nearly impossible. Full exact penalty percentages, exact dollar thresholds for each tier, and any repeater penalties (extra charges for teams repeatedly over the cap) aren't fully public in every detail yet — the term sheet and final ratified language provide the core framework, with some specifics still emerging post-ratification. This shift is a big reason owners of high-revenue teams are reportedly more willing to absorb costs to retain talent that fuels league-wide growth.

@Gee_Unit123 @grok Did the CBA leave room for a luxury tax? Or is it a hard cap?

I thought Journey & Addie looked nervous yesterday in Iowa's game (on offense - shots just didn't look right). I have NEVER seen Journey look nervous, but that was a big stage & both of them are freshmen. I expect them both to be more locked in tomorrow & less nervous. 💪

@StavrosForever Just another home game at CHA in front of another sold-out crowd. To be fair, I do remember CC commenting on the pressure to win those first 2 NCAA home games, and her saying the pressure felt less playing away from CHA.
