GSAI’s Women’s Weekly Dose this week focused on “Breaking Barriers at the Primaries: Why Women Struggle to Emerge Candidates” It was both insightful and impactful. Speaking on GSAI’s Weekly Women’s Dose Podcast Conversation on X (Twitter Space), Hon. Aso Joy Baba highlighted a pressing challenge, the high cost of nomination forms, which continues to discourage many capable women from stepping into politics. Hon. Aso Joy Baba emphasized that beyond passion and competence, financial barriers remain a major obstacle, as not every woman has the resources or structural support to purchase these forms and compete effectively. However, she also brought a powerful reassurance: Women are not the problem, they are the strength. She emphasized that women are ready and willing to support other women in politics when there is a clear, people-centered agenda. With women forming a significant portion of voters across Nigeria, the potential for impact is undeniable. Her message was clear: When the vision is right, women will mobilize. When the agenda is clear, women will deliver. From party primaries to national elections, women have the numbers and the influence to shape outcomes, if given the opportunity. This conversation reinforces a crucial call: Reduce financial barriers, Create enabling structures, Support credible women candidates. Because participation should not be determined by who can afford the process, but by who can lead and serve effectively. At GSAI, we amplify this truth: Women are ready. Women are capable. Women will show up, if the system makes room. Because when women are empowered to participate, democracy becomes more inclusive, representative, and impactful. Missed the conversation? At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we believe that inclusive leadership is not just an ideal, it is a necessity for progress. As Sadiq Khan rightly states, “Cities and nations work better when women help govern them.” Across the world, evidence continues to show that when women are included in governance, decisions become more balanced, policies more responsive, and societies more equitable. Yet, despite this, women remain underrepresented in leadership spaces, excluded not by lack of capacity, but by systemic barriers. This is more than a gender gap. It is a development gap. At GSAI, we continue to advocate for intentional inclusion, through policy reforms, stronger representation, and sustained support for women in leadership. Because when women have a seat at the table, governance reflects the realities of all people, not just a few. Because better leadership is inclusive leadership. And when women lead, nations don’t just function, they thrive. #GSAI #WomenInLeadership #InclusiveGovernance #ReservedSeatsBill

This week on Women’s Weekly Dose, 🗓Join us tomorrow Thursday, 2nd April 2026 |⏰ 6PM | 📍 X space (Twitter). As we dive deep into a powerful conversation that matters,” Breaking Barriers at the Primaries: Why Women Struggle to Emerge Candidates” Joining us is HON. ASO JOY BABA, The president FCT Women in Politics and the Present Women Development Officer Abaji Area Council. And the Woman Leader City Boy Movement Abaji Area Council. Tomorrow, she will be addressing a critical and often overlooked stage in women’s political participation, the primaries. “Breaking Barriers at the Primaries: Why Women Struggle to Emerge Candidates,” goes to the heart of why representation remains low despite growing advocacy. From prohibitive nomination fees and limited access to campaign financing, to entrenched party structures, godfatherism, and deeply rooted cultural biases, women are often filtered out before they even reach the ballot. The system demands negotiation, compromise, and access to networks that many women are deliberately excluded from. This is not a question of competence. It is a question of access, equity, and intentional inclusion. When women are unable to emerge at the primaries, democracy is weakened, and governance loses the diversity of thought and experience it desperately needs. Because representation is not just about numbers, it is about who gets the opportunity to lead. At GSAI, we call for urgent reforms within political parties, stronger support systems for female aspirants, and policies that level the playing field, ensuring that women are not just participants, but contenders and winners. Because true inclusion starts where decisions are made. And until women can emerge, they cannot lead. At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we celebrate voices that are not just heard, but are shaping the future of gender equality across Africa. Olaoluwa Abagun stands as a powerful example of what happens when passion meets purpose. From a young girl inspired by the Child Rights Act to a global advocate addressing the United Nations General Assembly, her journey reflects courage, clarity, and commitment to transforming systems that limit women and girls. Through initiatives like Girl Pride Circle and Safe Kicks, she has moved beyond conversation to action, equipping young girls with the tools to defend themselves, assert their rights, and step boldly into spaces where they have long been excluded. Her message is clear: feminism is not a battle, it is a call for equal opportunity, dignity, and the freedom for every individual to thrive. At GSAI, we are reminded that real change is driven by those who refuse to accept limitations, who challenge norms, amplify voices, and build pathways for others to rise. Because when young women are empowered, they don’t just break barriers, they redefine what is possible. #GSAI #WomenInLeadership #GirlsEmpowerment #GenderEquality

At the heart of International Women’s Day/Month 2026, Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI) stood present at the Joint Symposium for Special Needs Groups in Nigeria, not just to participate, but to amplify a truth that cannot be ignored: inclusion must be intentional, or it will remain invisible. Speaking at the symposium, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, Country Representative to UN Women and Ecowas emphasized that true equality demands reaching those facing multiple and overlapping forms of discrimination first. Policies, she noted, must reflect women as they truly exist, not as statistics, but as lived realities. From women living positively with HIV, where prevalence among women (1.9%) is more than double that of men (0.9%), to women with disabilities who remain excluded from education, healthcare, and justice, the message was clear: these are not personal failures, but systemic ones. Elderly women, often left outside policy focus, continue to face economic insecurity and invisibility. Young girls still confront early pregnancy risks shaped by inequality, while education remains a powerful shield, reducing vulnerability from 34% to just 4%. Meanwhile, over 3.5 million internally displaced persons, many of them women and girls, face compounded hardship and uncertainty. Reinforcing this call, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Honorable Minister of Budget and Economic planning highlighted the importance of inclusive budgeting and social protection, while Boonto Krittayawa, the country director of UNAIDS Nigeria urged a transformation of social norms and stronger community-driven solutions. At GSAI, we are reminded that development cannot be called progress if it leaves the most vulnerable behind. This moment is a call to move beyond conversations, to design policies that protect, systems that include, and structures that empower every woman, in every circumstance. Because true inclusion is not symbolic, it is systemic, intentional, and non-negotiable. #GSAI #IWD2026 #InclusiveDevelopment #GenderEquality

At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we believe that a nation cannot truly rise when the voices of its women are missing from the rooms where decisions are made. Women are the backbone of our homes, our communities, and our economy. They nurture, they build, they lead, and yet, their presence in governance remains critically low. This is not just a gap; it is a missed opportunity for national progress. The Reserved Seats for Women Bill is a bold and necessary step toward changing this reality. By creating additional seats across all states, the FCT, and each geopolitical zone, it ensures that women are not just participants, but key contributors to shaping Nigeria’s future. This is not about taking space from others, it is about expanding the table. It is about strengthening democracy, deepening representation, and ensuring that policies reflect the lived realities of all Nigerians. Passing this Bill is more than legislation, it is a commitment to equity, inclusion, and sustainable development. It is a declaration that Nigeria is ready to move forward with all its people. Because when women are empowered to lead, nations grow stronger, communities thrive, and the future becomes more inclusive for everyone. Pass the Bill. Strengthen democracy. Secure the future. #GSAI #ReservedSeatsBill #WomenInLeadership #InclusiveGovernance

At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we recognize that the stories a nation tells, shape the future it builds. When narratives are limited by stereotypes, they do more than misrepresent, they restrict potential, reinforce inequality, and slow down progress. Non-stereotype reporting is not just a media responsibility; it is a development imperative. When women are portrayed beyond narrow roles, when their leadership, expertise, and impact are fully represented, society begins to see them not as exceptions, but as essential drivers of national growth. Accurate, inclusive storytelling opens doors. It influences policy, shifts mindsets, and creates space for more women to lead, participate, and contribute meaningfully across sectors, from governance to business, from education to innovation. At GSAI, we believe that breaking stereotypes in the media is a powerful step toward building a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous Nigeria. Because when we change the narrative, we change the nation. At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we believe that the strength of any society is reflected in who sits at the decision-making table. As Fatou Bensouda powerfully states, “Justice and governance suffer when women are absent from leadership.” Across Nigeria and beyond, the underrepresentation of women in politics and governance continues to weaken systems that are meant to serve all. When women are excluded, policies lack balance, justice becomes selective, and governance fails to reflect the realities of half the population. This is not just a gender issue, it is a governance issue. At GSAI, we continue to advocate for intentional inclusion through reforms like the Reserved Seats for Women Bill, because justice cannot thrive in exclusion, and democracy cannot function at full strength without women. Because when women are present in leadership, justice is stronger, governance is fairer, and societies are more resilient. #GSAI #WomenInLeadership #InclusiveGovernance

What happened on March 19, 2026, at the Alue-Do Festival in Uruamudhu Community, Ozoro, is a painful reminder that for many women, public spaces are still not safe. The images of young women being chased, harassed, and stripped are not just disturbing, they are unacceptable. No tradition, no celebration, and no cultural practice should ever come at the cost of a woman’s dignity. At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we believe that culture should uplift, not harm. When women are dehumanized in the name of tradition, it is no longer culture, it is a violation. Regardless of ongoing investigations or conflicting reports, one truth remains clear: every woman deserves respect, safety, and protection at all times. This moment calls for more than outrage. It calls for responsibility, from communities, leaders, and institutions, to ensure that women and girls can live freely without fear. Because a society that cannot protect its women cannot claim progress. At GSAI, we stand firm: women are not objects, not targets, not afterthoughts, they are human beings with rights that must be protected and upheld. Now is the time to act, to speak, and to ensure that such violations never happen again. #GSAI #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #ProtectWomen #GenderJustice

At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we are reminded that progress without action is not enough. This reminder was brought to the fore on this episode of AIT's Flagship Policy Literacy program for women, Gender Agenda curated by Gender Strategy Advancement International. Our Executive Director, Dr. Adaora Onyechere Sydney-Jack and creative director of the program, delivered a powerful call to action: every society has a duty to protect the dignity, safety, and freedom of women and girls. This is not optional, it is fundamental. Engaging with Beatrice Eyong, The UNWomen Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, our Executive Director, Dr. Adaora Onyechere Sydney-Jack, spotlighted the theme “IWD: Gains, Reflect and Nigeria’s Inclusion Forecast”; a call rooted in rights, justice, and action. The Ms Eyong's message was simple: we have made progress, not yet where we need to be but will continue to push for action until we get to where we need to be. She further affirmed that women have advanced, breaking silences, gaining ground in education, contributing over 70% of agricultural labour, and showing competence across sectors yet progress without justice, representation, and equal opportunity is incomplete. Because if we are all born free and equal, as affirmed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, then inequality in the 21st century is unacceptable. And yet, reality confronts us. The events in Delta State are a painful reminder that gains without protection are fragile. Our Executive Director emphasized that Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, must lead, not just in words, but in decisive reforms. The passage of the Reserved Seats for Women Bill is critical to ensuring women are not just present, but represented at the table where decisions are made. At GSAI, we stand firm: No compromise on women’s rights. Gender Agenda Airs every friday at 4.30 pm on Africa Independent Television AIT and streams live on youtube on Africa independent television with a repeat on Monday at 5:30pm youtube.com/live/hI7Kp-Mig…

At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we recognize the media as one of the most powerful forces in shaping perception, culture, and societal norms. For too long, gender stereotypes have been reinforced through narrow narratives, but today, a shift is underway. The media is beginning to challenge outdated portrayals and embrace stories that reflect the strength, diversity, and leadership of women across all sectors. This transformation is not just about representation; it is about redefining possibility. When the media tells inclusive stories, it does more than inform, it empowers. It inspires young girls to see beyond limitations, encourages women to step into leadership, and holds societies accountable to more equitable standards. At GSAI, we believe that breaking stereotypes requires intentional storytelling, stories that amplify voices, challenge bias, and promote truth over tradition. Because when the media embraces diversity and inclusion, it does not just reflect society, it reshapes it. GSAI’s Women’s Weekly Dose this week focused on “Solidarity or Competition? How Women Can Support Each Other in Politics?” It was both insightful and impactful. Speaking on GSAI’s Weekly Women’s Dose Podcast Conversation on X (Twitter Space), Dr. Utchay Odims reminded us that growth requires humility, intentional learning, and the courage to seek guidance. Mentorship is not weakness, it is strategy. It is the bridge between potential and impact. Dr. Utchay Odims emphasized that, mentorship remains one of the most powerful tools for advancing women in leadership and across all sectors. It is not a sign of weakness to learn, it is a strategy for growth, resilience, and impact. For many women, the journey to leadership is often navigated in isolation. Yet, progress becomes faster and more sustainable when women are willing to learn, serve, and grow under guidance. Mentorship bridges the gap between potential and performance, opening doors that may otherwise remain closed. But mentorship is only one side of the equation, unity is the force that sustains it. When women support women, celebrate each other’s success, and create safe spaces for growth, they build a collective strength that can reshape systems and influence governance. At GSAI, we echo this call: women must move beyond competition to collaboration, from silence to solidarity, and from ambition to collective action. Because when women mentor, unite, and uplift one another, they do not just rise individually, they transform the future for generations to come. Missed the conversation? At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we know that leadership is not just about power, it is about purpose, justice, and the future we choose to build. As Zainab Bangura rightly affirms, “When women lead politically, peace and justice follow.” Across nations, evidence continues to show that women’s leadership brings a stronger focus on peacebuilding, social protection, accountability, and inclusive development. Yet, despite this, women remain underrepresented in the very spaces where decisions about peace and justice are made. This is not just a representation gap, it is a missed pathway to stability and progress. At GSAI, we continue to advocate for intentional inclusion through reforms like the Reserved Seats for Women Bill, because a nation that seeks peace must create room for the voices that build it. Because when women lead, they do not just govern, they heal, they restore, and they transform societies. #GSAI #WomenInLeadership #InclusiveGovernance
