People act weirdly scandalised about MPs drinking at work but when I worked in an office we'd think nothing of going out for lunch and having a pint. Two separate offices I've worked in regularly paid for us to drink beer at our desks on a Friday afternoon.

@Fremond_ Lots of jobs have a contract clause about drinking in work hours. Not even remotely rare

Even if drinking culture in Westminster was a problem (it’s not, it’s a matter of National pride), unless you’re willing to enforce Prohibition rules on Members of Parliament, they are going to drink regardless. It is infinitely better they do it on the estate than outside.

@lukejcr So basically you admit that MPs drinking on the job isn’t acceptable but then you changed the subject because you know you shot yourself in the foot by trying to defend it previously?

Oh I see you’ve joined the clickbait club too on this Zack. 🎟️ The real outrage? The Greens’ newest MP has bothered to speak just once since entering Parliament last month. Once. I’ve spoken 10 times in the same timeframe. But Zack, I’d be happy to have a pint or (non-alcoholic one) with you any time to discuss rampant antisemitism in your party, your dangerous anti-NATO views or how your vibe based economics would bankrupt Britain. Cheers! 🍻

A choice for Labour MPs before a big set of elections to go out campaigning on: "MPs should be able to drink alcohol before voting because they work long days." They're really revealing themselves, aren't they? Time to replace Labour. Join.greenparty.org.uk

Working in a palace is mad. It’s part of job I struggle most with. Smell of fags&beer at 10pm are one of things that make it seem tiny bit normal🍻 I say that as someone who’s never smoked & got sober to become an MP! If I ever feel comfortable there, it’s time to leave…

I stopped long, boozy business lunches way back in the early 1980s, you patronising numpty, while they were still fashionable. Good thing too. I needed to concentrate on beating the reactionary print unions in the Battle of Wapping (we won!). But the idea bankers (and others) still don’t have a drink at lunchtime is only someone like you would believe, Clackers.
Agnes Clackett@AgnesClackett

@afneil Not the 1980s anymore, Andrew, long boozy lunches like the sort u enjoyed way out of fashion in today’s workplace - drug testing U are so out of touch with the world 🌎 today

@afneil I think you’ll be on the wrong side of public opinion with this one. Most jobs (long hours or not) don’t condone or accept drinking during work hours

“Smell the alcohol”?! Wow. I wonder what she thinks it will be like when she and the Greens get their way and legalise heroin? Also, she says that, unlike MPs, she doesn’t think bankers would have a drink then go back to work. What planet is she on?

🚨Breaking news: MPs are human and sometimes have a drink. Classic clickbait farming 👎 MPs work long days for constituents, and yes, sometimes share a drink in the evening with colleagues. Last week I was scandalously spotted with… an alcohol-free pint or two between votes 😱 But sure, let’s talk about that instead of the Greens’ wacky policies. Trying to distract us, maybe? 🙄
