48 YEARS AGO: In July 1978 Amstrad launched the Tower System hi-fi. Unbelievable as it seems now, before then you would have to buy the items separately - turntable, amplifier, radio tuner, cassette deck and speakers - and then wire them all together! Even crazier, hi-fi enthusiasts at the time would buy a separate turntable, arm and cartridge! Of course we did make matching hi-fi separates before then, but it was the sheer waste of materials (and hence money) that inspired me to make the tower system.
