This week, I officially became a PhD Candidate!🧠 This exam pushed me to sharpen how I defend complex ideas, and I’m grateful for the support from my co-mentors Hugo Guerrero-Cazares and Takahisa Kanekiyo Here’s to the next chapter of my PhD journey! Lots of coffee in sight ☕️

DYK around half of the brain is not made of neurons? Among the other half is the octopus-like microglia. In this visualization by our Electron Microscopy team, microglia (green) wraps around a pyramidal cell (blue), one of two types of excitatory neurons in the brain.

Geoffrey Meissner and The Flylight Project Team at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus created this video to display the map of the fruit fly’s ventral nerve cord (VNC), which is like our spinal cord. The video shows neurons within the VNC of a fruit fly as they’re progressively stacked on top of each other. Each image represents a different dataset, and they were all digitally fitted together. By the end of the video, you can see a rough neuronal map within the VNC. Videos like these can give researchers a more complete understanding of the organization and communication between neurons in the VNC. This could be the foundation for future research on neuronal communication and organization in more complex animals such as humans. Researchers at @HHMIJanelia are decoding how neurons carry out computations carefully calibrated to an animal’s movement and environment to precisely regulate the release of neuromodulators—chemicals that fine-tune brain activity and enable us to adapt to new situations. The new findings could help scientists better understand how the brain enables flexible behavior and provide insight into mood disorders like #depression. Read more here: hhmi.news/43YcVID

I love being a PhD student. it feels like I’m expected to be miserable or overwhelmed. but as a first-gen student, I’ve had to overcome a lot worse to get here. to read and write and learn for a living feels like a gift that I hope I never take for granted, inshallah 🙏🏽
