Exercise Spurs Nerve Growth Through Biochemical and Physical Impact Researchers have discovered that exercise promotes neuron growth by both biochemical and physical means. When muscles contract, they release biochemical signals called myokines that stimulate neurons to grow and mature. The study showed that neurons exposed to myokines grew four times faster than those not exposed. In addition to biochemical effects, researchers found that neurons also grow significantly when they are physically stretched, simulating the movement muscles undergo during exercise. This combined biochemical and physical influence underscores the powerful impact of exercise on nerve health. These insights could pave the way for new therapies to repair damaged nerves and treat neurodegenerative conditions.
