@20394bbfbjeene your gm would trade frondell nazar and 4 1sts for him and we'd say no

@GenoManager @kevoisthegoat McAvoy? Sanderson? Seider? If these are the guys in that top tier its borderline malpractice to not have Fox their imo.

@20394bbfbjeene slaf has been called a bust by the entire nhl and the majority of the fanbase for his whole career. He's probably one of the most underrated for that reason

@SteadyHabs alot of the good contract stuff was also just timing, e happened to get lucky before the major cap increase, and had this culture established right before hutson and demidov were due. But we also signed dobson to the biggest deal on the time.

@GenoManager If that's the case then that's the plan I think. Lock up a very cheap core group of players with enough real youth to guarantee a long contention window, stay competitive and wait for the opportunity to strike on a major name if it ever arises.

I've come to be fine with the Habs not making a move. They potentially have a long term line if Hage and Zharovsky develop into legit top 6 players, and they're going to be much younger and cheaper than any alternative. In the meantime, Kapanen deserves benefit of the doubt.
NHL Rumour Report@NHLRumourReport

Elliotte Friedman: I think the one frustration for the Canadiens is...could they find a younger top six forward, like somebody in their 20s; they would be aggressive - 32 Thoughts (7/6)

@SteadyHabs i think they'd be okay with it. They understand the market and what it takes to win. They seem to just care about that

@GenoManager Imagine a world where you have that deal (and Hutson's) + all of the core, and then you add Hage and Zharovsky on ELCs...what kind of cap space will be available for a big homerun signing? Of course the players wouldn't be ok with ANY player making twice their salary but...

@kevoisthegoat personally i'd probably go (no order) makar, hughes, werenski, hutson, dahlin, heiskanen, seider, schaefer, sanderson, bouchard, McAvoy and then fox is in the next convo with Morrisey and whoever else

@GenoManager Don't get me wrong I'd put up a package with him included for Wright but the Kraken appear to be interested in extracting more value so I am content with the Habs returning to Kapanen for now

@SteadyHabs @DavidSt_Louis I like him alot, just might be a case of too many players in front of him here to ever develop into the best version of himself. Alot of politics for a 2nd round guy to ever pass guys like Caufield, Slaf, Suzuki etc. on the PP depth chart, and without PP1 hard to score alot

@GenoManager I dunno, I've been watching a bunch of his footage and I really see clear cut top 6 skill and processing. Speed of execution and overall pace is a concern, but well supported with good linemates he could ease into the league. @DavidSt_Louis had a good EP video I just rewatched

@SteadyHabs by far the biggest thing is getting demidov signed to that absurd deal. I'll take no moves for that

@GenoManager And going this route opens up juicier free agent opportunities in a year or two

@SteadyHabs i think relatively "weak" individual players can still develop into a good player in their role if they get fed great linemates and ice time. I think of guys like Lindholm (obviously good but looked like a 1C at times when he's just not), M. Geekie a bit

@GenoManager And as much as I've been critical of Kapanen, he most definitely could improve significantly. He clearly ran out of gas last year, and with Hage coming he'll feel some heat.

@SteadyHabs i still think its gonna be unlikely Zharovsky is that valuable here, he seems like a PP half wall guy who's never gonna get pp1. Might be more valuable in a trade, but we've got time to still build his value

@GenoManager The odds are decent that both can become true top 6 guys, it just takes a bit of patience. Not a guarantee, but having a long term line of say Zharovsky-Hage-Demidov suddenly fixes much of the fundamental issues, by giving the Habs an extended contention timeline.

We currently have nearly 600,000 votes across all positions. This is already the richest hockey fan consensus, across a highly educated fanbase, that has ever existed. If you're interested in contributing to the votes (100% free) or seeing the rankings: hockeystats.com/rankings-vote

Taking a moment to appreciate how cool our rankings vote is. I used to make a poll on HFBoards if I wondered "do fans think player X or player Y is better?" It might get 100 votes. Now, our vote runs EVERY poll. For example, we already have 195 votes for "Bedard vs Caufield".

@GenoManager I don’t think Suzuki is around top 15, that’s like barely making playoffs range and he’s the most used C on the canadiens. He’s at least 10.

@burner_acc10647 Yeah it’s dependant which crowd ur in for sure. He’s probably slightly underrated by the NHL (some scouts said he’s like a #2 d lol) but I just happen to be around a lot of analytics accounts that put him top 3 and don’t think he’s there

@GenoManager I said Cale Makar. He's insanely good and undeniably top 3 (and I would agree to him being the best) but he's not bobby orr and he shouldn't be getting norris votes on reputation alone
