
We ran AI visibility audits on 15 of the biggest Content Marketing platforms and 15 of the discipline's most recognised practitioners. Then we put the numbers side by side.
Enterprise platforms: 66 average.
Individual practitioners: 55 average.
An 11-point gap. But the more important finding is not the size of the gap; it is the nature of it. These two groups are not failing at the same thing.
📋 Enterprise platforms have a metadata problem. The content exists in the right format. The structured declaration layer on top of it - Organisation Schema, llms.txt, machine-readable social proof- is largely missing. Add the signals, close the gap.
🎙️ Individual practitioners have a format problem. Significant portions of their intellectual property- keynotes, podcast appearances, recorded talks- exist in formats AI retrieval systems cannot read. The gap is not just about missing Schema tags. It is about content that needs to exist as structured text before it can be cited at all.
📊 The Citation Worthiness gap tells the starkest story. Enterprise platforms average 64. Individual practitioners average 51. A 13-point gap on the metric that most directly determines whether you appear when AI answers a question about your category.
🏗️ The sub-group pattern is consistent across both benchmarks. Closer to structured, product-oriented content = better AI visibility. Further from it = lower scores. The discipline's most conceptually influential voices are also its least AI-visible.
🤝 One signal is universally absent across all 30 audited entities. Structured, machine-readable social proof. Thirty organisations and individuals have earned genuine external validation. Not one is getting AI credit for it.
The distance between being known by AI and being cited by AI is the gap that the next phase of content marketing optimisation is about. For enterprise platforms, closing it is a technical roadmap. For individual practitioners, it is a format and infrastructure decision.
Both are well within reach of people and organisations that have already built the underlying authority. The foundation is there. The structured layer on top of it, for most of them, is not yet.
