All you need to know about Genuine Undead: Genuine Undead (GU) was created by an anonymous artist. After an initial mint on June 9, 2022 at 0.08 ETH that was ultimately stopped, the artist officially launched the collection August 13, 2022 via a discreet, free mint on Ethereum. The collection (around 10,000 NFTs in 24x24 pixel art, including Classic, Cyberpunk, and a few Legendaries variants) quickly minted out. From the start, the artist adopted an unconventional approach: communication through “Green Papers,” a desire to remain in the background, and a clear positioning as a creator rather than a leader. He reduced royalties, gave half to the community, and actively encouraged community ownership of the project. 🐺 History and volume The original collection, known as GU Origins (V1), quickly generated significant volume, reaching over 16k ETH historically, with an ATH of 1 ETH, despite a bear market context and no traditional marketing. Very early on, an organic community formed around the project (Discord, Twitter/X @GenuinelyUndead), driven by a core principle that became its signature: “The Community is the Utility.” 🐺 Community evolution and smart contracts Over time, the community gradually took control of the project through Genuine Undead Holdings, a structure that now owns the trademark and oversees legal and technical aspects (multisig, governance, etc.). V1 (GU Origins): original contract deployed by the artist in August 2022. This is the contract that holds the historical volume (~16k ETH). The NFTs still exist on this contract. V2 (Genuine Undead): launched in September 2024 via a smart contract fully controlled by the community. Holders can migrate their V1 to this new contract; the old NFTs are then permanently locked in an inaccessible escrow wallet (not burned) to maintain provenance and txn history. V2 introduced several improvements: upgraded images (PNG/JPEG + high-fidelity SVG), enhanced security (2FA-compatible), on-chain engraving, and access to future features (including the $GUSTR ecosystem). More than 60% of holders have migrated. 🐺 Transition to V3 (new contract) Following the Community Take-Over, a major vote was held in early May 2026 to deploy a third smart contract (V3). The objective is clear: permanently unify the collection, consolidate its history, and prepare a new phase of development. V3 marks a key step: it is not just a technical migration, but a restructuring of the entire project around a single, community-controlled foundation. 🐺 V3 deployment and latest announcements The migration to V3 is currently underway and is progressing smoothly overall, although some final adjustments are still in progress. A major point: the historical V1 volume has been migrated to V3, now showing around 15k ETH traded directly on the new contract. This preserves the project’s credibility and history within a single active collection. Regarding V2, since it could not be deleted, it has been turned into “GU Legacy.” OpenSea has intentionally made it invisible (not indexed, not promoted), and visuals will be replaced with a universal placeholder. Holders are encouraged to hide their legacy NFTs. From a governance perspective, Genuine Undead Holdings now controls all critical elements: the OpenSea account, the deployer wallet, and the smart contract. Access is currently limited to a few key members, with transparency in case of any changes. The deployment also benefited from particularly low gas fees, significantly reducing treasury costs. A dApp update is planned, after which no further migrations will be possible through it — marking the end of the transition process. On-chain engraving, a core element of the project’s identity, is still being deployed on this new version. 🐺 Future of the collection Genuine Undead now stands as one of the most advanced examples of a Community Take-Over in the NFT ecosystem: a successful transition from an artistic project to a fully community-driven, decentralized, and sustainable structure. The project is built on several pillars: recognized pixel art, strong community-driven lore, on-chain features (engraving), and an expanding ecosystem ($GUSTR, Undeadz, events, physical gallery, and metaverse). With V3, GU enters a new phase: more unified, more readable, and technically more robust.
