Tanzania Launches AGCOT: A Bold New Era for Agricultural Transformation Dodoma, Tanzania – April 27, 2025 Today, the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Kassim Majaliwa Majaliwa, officially launched the Agricultural Growth Corridors of Tanzania (AGCOT), marking a historic milestone in the nation’s agricultural development agenda. AGCOT builds upon and expands the success of the pioneering Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) initiative, with the aim of replicating its transformative impact across multiple regions of the country. AGCOT is a visionary, nationwide program designed to drive sustainable and inclusive agricultural growth. It seeks to harness the collective strengths of the private sector, smallholder farmers, and development partners to revolutionize Tanzania’s agricultural landscape. Rooted in the achievements of SAGCOT — established in 2010 to catalyze agricultural investment and innovation in Southern Tanzania — AGCOT now extends its reach to new corridors including the Mtwara, Central, and Northern Zones. Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Majaliwa emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to positioning agriculture at the heart of national economic growth and food security efforts. “AGCOT is not just an agricultural program; it is a call to action for every stakeholder to be part of Tanzania’s journey toward prosperity and resilience,” he declared. The launch event was attended by key leaders and stakeholders, including the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Hussein Bashe; the Chairman of the AGCOT Board of Directors, Dr. Ally Laay; and representatives from the AGCOT Board of Trustees, among them Dr. Thomas Bwana, Director General of the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI). The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) and the Agricultural Council of Tanzania (ACT) were also represented. Development partners who have played a crucial role in supporting AGCOT’s vision were represented by Mr. Odd Arnesen, Deputy Ambassador at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Tanzania. AGCOT signals a new era of agricultural modernization, resilience, and economic empowerment, firmly aligned with Tanzania’s national goals and the broader continental vision of food sovereignty and resilience as championed through the Dakar 2 Summit resolutions.
