I am a committed Turcophile, and I have been making this point to Turkish friends for years. Exonyms are a sign of respect, a sign that you have made an impression on another country. No British person would ask Italians to stop saying Londra, any more than Italians would insist on our saying Milano. Germans are right to call Bratislava Pressburg, Hungarians to call it Pozsony. Rohirrim are not so woke as to call Mundburg “Minas Tirith”. Insisting on “Türkiye” is insisting on Third World status. It is demanding to be treated like some post-colonial failed state rather than as a great and confident civilisation.

🚨🇨🇮 Bastian Schweinsteiger is facing accusations of racism after comments he made about Ivory Coast following Germany's 2-1 victory. The former Germany midfielder described Ivory Coast as playing “a bit African style, a bit unconventional, a bit wild and perhaps not overly disciplined tactically,” adding that it made them an unpredictable team. Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé responded: 🗣️ “I find this disappointing. Schweinsteiger was a great footballer. I've always admired his understanding of the game, but as a person, I'm disappointed. If we want, we can call it racism; we need to call things by their right names.” Faé also stressed that African teams are not only physically strong but also technically and tactically accomplished, adding that he hopes Schweinsteiger's remarks were simply an unfortunate choice of words rather than a reflection of his true beliefs.

I have been coming to Cyprus for twenty years, and it is incredibly beautiful in many respects, but I have yet to go to a single home in my dozens of visits that has any books in it, and was at an event a few evenings ago where someone told me “we do not read.” I believe this is true, as parents do not read to their children, there is no tradition of the bedtime story or otherwise. I find it exceedingly sad that such an ancient hub of civilization and historical richness is so lacking in what feels like intellectual depth. There’s a very live-in-the-moment mentality that does not track to me with either the history or ancient religious tradition of the place. It frankly feels like a disinterest in anything that is not related to the present calendar year, and I wonder what led to this, because it is not a new phenomenon and cannot be blamed on a social media culture. I don’t want to be unfairly critical but am truly interested to understand why something that seems as fundamental as reading seems to hold almost no value to people here, and perhaps never really has.

Gürdeniz, the theorist of “Lebensraum” as expressed in the doctrine of the Blue Homeland, admits the enduring Turkish complex toward the West. The Tanzimat was a belated attempt to save the Ottoman Empire, which had fallen behind Europe in political organization, technology, trade, science, military structure, and institutions. The Ottoman Empire did not collapse because some “foreigners” constructed artificial national identities, as the contemporary Turkish narrative conveniently claims. It collapsed because for centuries it failed to produce progress comparable to that of Europe. While Europe, through conflicts, revolutions, the Enlightenment, separation of powers, science, rights, and freedom of expression, made leaps of progress, the Ottoman power structure remained anachronistic, expansionist, and deeply unproductive for the peoples and territories it controlled. This historical trauma was never overcome and was transformed into megalomania: the idealization of the Ottoman past, denial of decline, a fantasy of geopolitical mission, and the desire for Turkey to reemerge as a regulator between East and West. From Syria and Iraq to Libya, Africa, the Balkans, and energy corridors, Turkish policy seeks to cover its old sense of inferiority through displays of power. It is the same complex, simply dressed in neo-Ottoman rhetoric. ▪ The West is portrayed as decadent: “the Atlantic system has collapsed,” “NATO is dying.” ▪ Turkey’s attachment to the West is framed as a psychological pathology: a “complex dating back to the Tanzimat era.” ▪ Asia is presented as the new center of production, energy, and power. ▪ Turkey is implicitly positioned as a rising power in this new world, not merely as a member of a Western alliance. Thus, the statement has a clear structure of inversion: from the old Ottoman sense of inferiority toward Europe to overcompensation. In other words: “we are no longer behind the West; the West is behind us.” This is a classic pattern of political grandiosity: you devalue the model that historically traumatized you, present it as finished, and then project yourself as the bearer of the new historical wave. In Gürdeniz’s case, this aligns with the Blue Homeland doctrine, Eurasianist rhetoric, anti-Western strategic autonomy, and neo-Ottoman power projection.

Cem Gürdeniz: ▪️"We are NATO" diyorlar. Ne NATO'su, biz Türk'üz! ▪️NATO'nun yakında cenaze namazı kılınacak, hâlâ "We are NATO..."

🇹🇷💔 Turkey's World Cup nightmare goes on. After becoming the first team eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, losing both matches and scoring ZERO goals, Turkish fans had another frustration to deal with. Authorities ordered the closure of fan zones and giant screens across all 81 provinces ahead of the team's match against Paraguay, fearing noise, celebrations and traffic could disrupt more than 2.4 million students sitting crucial university entrance exams. In fairness, they probably didn't need to worry too much about loud celebrations after attempting 62 shots and not scoring a single goal. 😭😔

Turkey suffers from a chronic illusion of grandeur. A bubble inflated by symbolism, nationalism, and repetition. Massive convoys for a football team eliminated without scoring a single goal. Endless boasting about NATO’s second-largest army - formidable against Kurdish guerrillas, invisible everywhere else. A defence industry promoted as a revolution, yet Iranian missiles expose the gap between propaganda and power. The rhetoric is imperial. The results are humiliating. When a country has to remind the world every single day how strong and important it is, it’s usually because it isn’t. Real power speaks for itself.
