From Venezuela, Iran to now Cuba, western leftists enter these spaces in a privileged bubble, often staying in luxury hotels while being chauffeured around by government minders who only show the best of the country and introduce them to locals who perform an existence the regime wants to showcase. To the western leftist, this only reinforces their already held ideological fantasies of what an “anti-Western or anti-imperialist” utopia is supposed to be, while simultaneously erasing the reality of everyday repression and hardship (something that has been well documented for years).
