This early landscape by George Rodrigue, like many of his landscapes, features the oak tree as a defining characteristic of Louisiana. But this painting gives equal attention to the land or ground through Rodrigue’s inclusion of a coulee or path through the middle of the painting. The lushness of the land is conveyed through Rodrigue’s textured brushstrokes. Rodrigue balances the darkness of the land and trees with a warm light glowing from the oaks, in order to give viewers a sense of what Louisiana feels like. Untitled Landscape with Coulee c.1972 Oil on canvas 9 x 12 inches Available and on display at Rodrigue Studios New Orleans. Contact us to learn more at info@georgerodrigue.com

The composition of She Brought Me Sunshine is similar to that of a traditional still-life painting. Rodrigue included lit candles and flowers in the painting, which symbolize the fleeting nature of life and the passage of time in still life paintings. The Blue Dog sprouts from a pot of red flowers. Behind the dog, Rodrigue has painted a painting of one of his oak trees. In this way, Rodrigue acknowledges the passage of time within his own career, specifically the transition from his early depictions of the Louisiana landscape to incorporating the Blue Dog into his artistic language. The print’s title is inspired by the shades of yellow that give the work its bright, cheerful appearance. With its expressive layering of colors mimicking brushstrokes on a canvas, you might assume that George Rodrigue created the silkscreen print Life With the Poppies from an original painting. But like many of Rodrigue’s silkscreen prints, Life With the Poppies doesn’t have a corresponding painting. The work exists only in print form. Life With the Poppies depicts a group of yellow poppy flowers framing the lower half of the work’s primary subject, the Blue Dog. Historically, the inclusion of flowers in works of art represents themes of renewal, the passage of time, or impermanence. These themes may have influenced Rodrigue’s decision to depict his poppies with various levels of color saturation, reflecting different life cycle stages. Universally flowers symbolize beauty. As the work’s title suggests, beauty enriches our lives. That beauty can come from flowers, a work of art, or in the case of this print, both in one. Life with the Poppies Silkscreen by George Rodrigue 2006 17 x 15 inches Estate Completed Edition of 500 #’s 1-150 Signed by the Artist (Sold Out) #’s 151-500 Official Rodrigue Estate Stamp (sold unframed) Available at Rodrigue Studios and online: georgerodrigue.com/blog/product/l…

"So fond was the Landry Family of their chicken, Clotile, that they commissioned this portrait of her. I call it...The Two Hundred Pound Chicken on the Bayou!" -- G.R. The larger-than-life chicken has been pushed to the front of the canvas, and just like Rodrigue’s human figures, the bird is locked into the landscape by the tree trunk behind it. Standing on the dock, the chicken calls to mind later images of the Blue Dog, first done two years prior to this painting, and adds a whimsical element to the landscape. Like many of Rodrigue’s paintings, the river or pathway functions as a compositional device but can be hard to decipher as one or the other, much like Louisiana’s landscape is often a confusing maze of land and water. The inclusion of the dock in this painting indicates that Rodrigue intended this image to be of a river. “We think we know movie stars as people; but in real life they are someone else. The camera loves their look, and as a result we as an audience interpret what they think. We are seduced by their character. The Blue Dog is similar. You may look at it and think one thing, but deep down there’s always a mystery of why and what it is. These two classical icons together (Marilyn Monroe and the Blue Dog) create an even greater mystery. And to me, that’s the definition of art.” -G.R. In his book, Blue Dog Christmas, George Rodrigue draws a meaningful connection between the Blue Dog and the Christmas holiday. He explains how many of his early Christmas memories include his childhood dogs Lady and Trixie. He says that when he thinks of Christmas, dogs come to mind first, before the more traditional symbols of the holiday like trees, candy canes, snowmen, or Santa Claus. Throughout the book, Rodrigue points out the magic Christmas holds for children, and towards the end of the book, he writes, “we need something, like the blue dog, to come along and coax the little kid inside of us out of hiding.” For Rodrigue, the Blue Dog, like Christmas, offered a way to reconnect with a younger self. Blue Dog Christmas included several holiday-themed images that Rodrigue also created as silkscreen prints. Now, 25 years after the initial release of the book and holiday prints, Rodrigue Studio is pleased to offer Santa’s Helper for purchase once again. The print depicts the Blue Dog dressed in little red boots, a red poncho, and a Santa’s hat, set against a festive background. The print is a reminder of the magic of childhood, Christmas, and the Blue Dog. During a visit to New Mexico in 1985, George Rodrigue met an Indigenous American woman named Evergreen Lake. Shortly after their meeting, Rodrigue spent an afternoon photographing Evergreen Lake and used those photographs as reference images for paintings he created during the second half of the 1980s. Evergreen Lake became a recurring female figure in his paintings like Evangeline and Jolie Blonde. In this focused portrait Rodrigue paints Evergreen Lake amongst a background that includes elements of the American flag and colors that call to mind those Rodrigue used in his landscape paintings. Evergreen Lake's presence in Rodrigue’s paintings helped to expand the visual stories his work communicated about people and their connection to land. Rodrigue Estate Print Release Celebrates Nationwide Streaming of “BLUE: The Life and Art of George Rodrigue” on PBS Passport App! The silkscreen is based on a work that features the bust of a Blue Dog silkscreened onto chrome paper with hand-painted embellishments, including flowers and a yellow background. It’s the result of extensive artistic experimentation. To create mixed media works on chrome paper, Rodrigue had to find a paper that could absorb both silkscreen ink and acrylic paint. He eventually found materials that allowed him to execute his vision so thoroughly that he could use the chrome paper as he might a painting’s canvas, saturating the surface with vibrant, colorful designs. I'm a Movie Star 2010/2025 Silkscreen on chrome paper (sold unframed) 21 x 26 inches Edition of 225 Available at Rodrigue Studios and online here: bit.ly/imamoviestar
