One day, I'll receive an email about keynote speakers being announced for a big conference, and those speakers will be actual teachers. With timetabled classes. I'll receive an email about educational panel events where organisers have committed to having at least one person with a timetabled class on the panel. I'll receive an email about people being invited to some glitzy event in town or Number 10, and the people invited will be actual teachers. With timetabled classes. One day, but not today.

We’re pretty committed to going international teaching in September 2027. Who do I follow for tips, what do I need to do, what advice can current international teachers give me? I want to be fully prepared and aware!

Students who took notes by hand scored ~28% higher on conceptual questions than laptop note-takers. Writing forces your brain to process and compress ideas instead of copying them.

The I–We–You model works because it matches how the brain actually learns. I → reduces cognitive load with clear modelling We → builds strong mental models through guided practice You → only then do students work independently with confidence It’s not hand-holding. It’s cognitive science: novices need clarity before autonomy. When we get the sequence right, students don’t just “get it” - they own it.

Attention sits at the heart of learning. When pupils focus, they encode information more deeply, reduce cognitive load, and make room for meaningful understanding. Decades of cognitive science show that without attention, even the best teaching can’t take hold. If we want better learning, we start by protecting and directing attention.

Key ideas: ✅ Retrieval practice strengthens memory. ✅ Generative learning helps pupils Select → Organise → Integrate ideas. ✅ Revision needs to be taught, not just set. ✅ Scaffolding builds independence over time.

Too often, revision means rereading notes and hoping something sticks. But learning doesn’t happen by looking — it happens by thinking. Retrieval practice, generative learning and purposeful case study work make the difference.

This to me is what being evidence informed means. You can’t realistically keep up with all the latest studies - or the original research - but through good PD and general reading you can build a strong model to guide your thinking. teacherhead.com/2020/03/10/a-m…

High standards schools are going all in on techniques like Turn and Talk, SLANT, STAR, SHAPE and choral response, and I think we need to remember that "engagement is not a proxy for learning" doesn't just apply to posters, group work, wandering the room or whatever. Just because they are in SLANT or STAR doesn't mean they're listening Just because they snap to a pacy Turn and Talk doesn't mean the conversation starter was worth it Just because they've SHAPEd their answer into a nice full sentence doesn't mean they understand more than if they'd said it as one word Just because you get a belting response when you do a Call and Response doesn't mean all students are doing it, or understand what they are saying
Adam Boxer@adamboxer1

Turn and Talk is very popular right now, I see it in most lessons I go to. HOWEVER, in 95% of cases I watch it and think "that lesson would have been better without it to be honest" Why? 👇

Whenever I talk about mini-whiteboards, I will inevitably be asked "But what about the books? Won't there be less evidence of learning in them?" Here's the answer in the Carousel Teaching course on mini-whiteboards 👇👇 Find out more: carousel-learning.com/teaching

Normalise summer holiday boredom for kids. They need to learn firstly, that from boredom comes creativity, and secondly, that their entertainment/engagement is not entirely someone else’s responsibility. #edutwitter
