Moreover, the long standing argument that the United Kingdom has legitimate interests in Diego Garcia has lost its validity. It is difficult to justify how a state located more than 10,000 kilometres away can claim any genuine interest in such a territory, particularly when activities conducted from the island have recently raised concerns regarding their legality.

Today, in my capacity as Director Diplomatic and Foreign Affairs of the Diplomatic World Institute, I had the honour of attending the celebration marking the 55th Anniversary of the Independence and National Day of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The commemoration was graciously hosted by H.E. Mr. Khandker Masudul Alam, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Belgium, Luxembourg & Head of Mission to the European Union, together with Mme. Dr. Rabeya Sultana. The event provided an excellent opportunity to reflect on Bangladesh’s remarkable journey since independence, its dynamic role on the global stage, and the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and the European Union. It was a privilege to engage with distinguished representatives of the diplomatic community and to reaffirm our commitment to fostering dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding.

During the reception in Brussels, I had an informative and constructive exchange with the Ambassador of Palestine, H.E. Mrs. Amal Jadou Shaka’a, PhD, regarding the current situation in the region. In my role as a bridge‑builder, I consider it essential to listen to all perspectives with openness and respect. Maintaining dialogue without judgment is key to fostering understanding and supporting pathways toward peaceful and sustainable solutions.

I had the pleasure of attending an excellent networking reception this evening at the residence of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka. The event, organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the BELGOLUX Sri Lanka Business Council, offered a valuable opportunity to connect with members of the Belgian business community and to exchange views on strengthening bilateral cooperation. The reception also provided insightful information regarding the upcoming Economic Mission to Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Expo scheduled for June 2026. Sri Lanka, a vibrant island nation and the closest neighbour of the Maldives, continues to position itself as an important economic and cultural partner in the region. I was particularly delighted to reconnect with my esteemed colleague, the Consul of Sri Lanka, Monique Dedecker‑Deprez, whose presence added a warm and familiar touch to the evening. A well‑organized and inspiring event that further reinforces the strong ties between our communities.

This morning, I had the distinct honour of attending the annual familial royal service at the Church of Laeken. As is customary each February, this ceremony holds particular significance for me, owing to my longstanding and sincere loyalty to the monarchy. The service, held in the presence of Their Majesties the King and the Queen, several members of the Royal Family, senior dignitaries from Defence, and representatives of the Royal Palace, unfolded in an atmosphere of dignity, serenity, and respectful solemnity. It offered a moment of collective remembrance and reflection, during which tradition and institutional continuity were expressed with great refinement. Following the ceremony, a visit to the Royal Crypt provided an opportunity to reflect on the historical and symbolic legacy of the Belgian monarchy. The silence and solemnity of this space left a profound and lasting impression. Being invited to this occasion was an exceptional honour, reflecting trust, respect, and a deep connection with the traditions that shape our nation.

Ambassador Geela met with His Excellency Ammon Mutembwa, the Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Belgium. Discussions focused on strengthening trade and investment cooperation. The Ambassadors also exchanged views on enhancing collaboration through the OACPS.
