In the Fall, artists and curators in botanical illustration joined the @TheBotanics for the workshop "Plants on Paper: curatorial practice and the decolonization of collections of scientific prints and drawings.” Supported by a Paper Project grant, the workshop included two pre-workshop online seminars and an in-person workshop. Participants examined both the difficulties and opportunities involved in creating and curating botanical art, in the context of issues such as decolonization.

This month we welcomed several hundred international modern and contemporary art curators visiting for the annual @infoCimam conference, which we've proudly supported through travel grants since 2011. This year's program was held in conjunction with @PST_ART: Art & Science Collide and participants enjoyed the initiative's special tours at @MOCAlosangeles, @hammer_museum, @LACMA, and @GettyMuseum for a taste of curatorial talent in Southern California. What is Black Modernism? Architectural historian and grant panelist for Getty and @SavingPlaces' Conserving Black Modernism program Charles Davis answers this question and more in this interview shared by the National Trust. "To me, Black architectural modernity began as a process of resistance and humanization, just living and surviving and learning to become a whole person in this hostile space. It's now become a way of being. It’s a process of both aspiring to and attaining racial uplift, and the ways that our built environments embody this aspiration." We’re excited to renew funding for the initiative – keep an eye out for an announcement when applications open in the new year! We’re starting the week off with some photos from the Paper Project workshop, “Touched/Retouched: Paper across Time (1400–1800).” The workshop organized by the Lise Meitner Group @BiblHertz in collaboration with the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica provided object-based training for early career curators in the field of prints and drawings, focusing on premodern care practices and material histories of paper objects. Held in Rome this month, it hosted twelve professionals and senior discussants to provide essential technical and material knowledge, fostering collaboration between academics, curators, and conservators. Activities included hands-on examination and viewing exercises of works on paper at the ICG and the Hertziana, visits to the archive of the Fondazione Caetani in Rome and Fondazione Fedrigoni in Fabriano, as well as two practical sessions on letter locking and paper making.

Earlier this month we welcomed a group of Sudanese and Egyptian archaeologists to visit Getty Villa as part of "Nilotic Cultures," a Connecting Art Histories project organized by the UCLA Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. Their activities included a tour of the Villa grounds and galleries and the "Sculpted Portraits from Ancient Egypt" exhibit. Our Connecting Art Histories grant initiative aims to globally strengthen art history by fostering intellectual exchange among scholars and emphasizing the importance of bringing people together to enhance the vitality of the discipline. Initially focused on the Mediterranean Basin and Latin America, it has expanded to include the Global South and East Central Europe, targeting regions where economic or political challenges have hindered collaboration. Core activities have included training younger scholars and building their networks through seminars, workshops, and courses. These grants usually take place in other parts of the world, so we were especially delighted to have the chance to meet this group in person.
