🌱✨ Happy Norwuz! ✨🌱 As we celebrate the arrival of spring and the season of renewal, we also honor the deep and vibrant history of Iran—home to some of the world’s most influential ancient empires. 🌸📜 The story begins with Cyrus the Great, whose founding of the Achaemenid Empire in the 6th century BCE created one of antiquity’s most powerful and far‑reaching civilizations. Stretching from Greece’s borders to northern India, Persia stood as a center of immense wealth, culture, and innovation. 👑🌍 Even after the fall of the Achaemenids to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE, Persian identity flourished. The Parthian and Sasanian dynasties rose to reclaim and reshape the empire’s legacy—engaging, trading, and often clashing with giants like Greece and Rome. ⚔️🏺 All of this and more is explored in the richly illustrated book "Persia: Ancient Iran and the Classical World". Featuring over 300 images—from sculpture and jewelry to silver vessels, coins, gems, and inscriptions—the book traces centuries of artistic, religious, political, and cultural exchange across three great civilizations. 📘✨ May this Norwuz bring light, renewal, and a deeper appreciation of the remarkable heritage that continues to inspire today. 💛🌿 Norwuz Pirouz! 🌼🎉 Learn more here: gty.art/3OLSScM #Norwuz #Nowruz #PersianNewYear #AncientIran #PersiaBook #History #CulturalHeritage

✨Happy Women's History Month!✨ This week we're spotlighting Japanese American national treasure and San Francisco legend Ruth Asawa! Renowned for her innovative wire sculptures, Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa (1926–2013) was a teenager in Southern California when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II. Asawa nurtured her dreams of becoming an artist while imprisoned and eventually made her way to the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina. 🎨🖌️👩‍🎨 This graphic biography by Sam Nakahira, developed in consultation with Asawa’s youngest daughter, Addie Lanier, chronicles the genesis of Asawa as an artist—from the horror of Pearl Harbor to her transformative education at Black Mountain College to building a life in San Francisco, where she would further develop and refine her groundbreaking sculpture. Asawa never sought fame, preferring to work on her own terms: for her, art and life were one. Featuring lively illustrations and photographs of Asawa’s artwork, this graphic retelling of her young adult years demonstrates the transformative power of making art. 🌍✨ It's International Women's Day! ✨🌍 This year, we're celebrating by throwing it way back to the women of the ancient world—specifically the Kingdom of Nubia, located in what is now Sudan and southern Egypt. 👑🏺 In ancient Nubia, women ruled with power and authority equal to their male counterparts. Freed's new book, "Ancient Nubian Art: A History." 📘 Learn more about the extraordinary women of ancient Nubia in this article: 👉 gty.art/4aOT3fY 💪🌸 #InternationalWomensDay #WomensHistory #AncientNubia #GirlPower Image credits: Fig 7.53 Line Drawing of Queen Amanitore (right) and King Natakamani from the Facade of Apedemak Temple, Naga, Sudan, Meroitic period, mid-first century CE. 🎉 Happy Birthday to Michelangelo! 🎂🖌️ Born on this day in 1475, the fame and influence of Michelangelo Buonarroti were as immediate as they were unprecedented. 🌟🇮🇹 Michelangelo was the only living artist Giorgio Vasari included in the first edition of Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects (1550). 📚✨ Revised and expanded in 1568, Vasari’s monumental work spans more than two hundred biographies and remains a cornerstone of art history and Italian Renaissance studies. 🏛️📖 Vasari’s biography of Michelangelo celebrates his oeuvre as the culminating achievement of Renaissance painting, sculpture, and architecture. 🎨🗿 He recounts the artist’s expansive career—from his working habits, to the creation of masterpieces like the David and the Sistine Chapel ceiling, to Michelangelo’s relationships with popes and other illustrious patrons. 👑🔥 An introduction by scholar David Hemsoll traces the textual development of Vasari’s Lives and places Michelangelo’s biography within the broader tapestry of Renaissance art history. 🧐🏛️ 🔗 Learn more about The Life of Michelangelo here: gty.art/4r1MM5f

🎨 March is Youth Art Month! 🌟 Each week, we'll bring a different young adult or children's book from Getty Publications to you! 📚✨ This week we're highlighting “The Traveling Camera: Lewis Hine and the Fight to End Child Labor”! 📸🕊️ Beautifully illustrated by Michael Garland and poetically written by Alexandra S. D. Hinrichs, this children's book tells the inspiring story of Lewis Hine (1874–1940) — a teacher and photographer who used his art as a powerful tool for social reform. 🌍💪 Working for the National Child Labor Committee, Hine traveled the United States, documenting children as young as five working under dangerous conditions in cotton mills, seafood canneries, farms, and coal mines. ⚙️🏭⛏️ He often wore disguises to gain access to factories, posing as a machinery inspector or traveling salesman. 🎩🕵️‍♂️ He once said, "If I could tell this story in words, I wouldn't need to lug a camera." His poignant photographs captured the nation’s attention and helped pave the way for child labor laws. 📷⚖️ 🔗 Learn more here:gty.art/40GcNfL

✨ New Release Spotlight: "Ancient Nubian Art: A History" by Rita E. Freed ✨ wtih a foreword by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. For more than eight millennia, the kingdoms of Nubia shaped the cultural, artistic, and political landscape of the ancient world. Stretching across a vast region with connections to Greece, Rome, sub-Saharan Africa, the Red Sea, and the Sahel, Nubia nurtured an artistic legacy as expansive as its influence. Yet its achievements—monumental architecture, radiant jewelry, masterful ceramics, visionary sculpture—have long been overshadowed or miscast as peripheral to Egypt. Rita E. Drawing on her deep expertise as curator emerita at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—home to the largest Nubian collection outside the Nile Valley—Freed presents the first comprehensive and accessible survey of Nubian artistic culture. She traces its evolution across thousands of years, illuminating vibrant traditions of kingship and queenship, spirituality, identity, gender, innovation, and international exchange. Enriched with a foreword by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and insights from leading scholars, this landmark volume invites readers to see Nubia as it truly was: a world-shaping civilization of extraordinary creativity and complexity. 📘 Join us for a special book event celebrating this groundbreaking publication! 📍 Harvard Book Store 📅 March 4, 2026 🕖 7:00 PM Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the art, history, and legacy of one of the ancient world’s most influential cultures—and to hear directly from the experts bringing Nubia’s story to light. gty.art/4cqo9vv

✨ Black History Month Spotlight ✨ This month, we honor the stories, images, and histories that reveal the depth and brilliance of the Black experience. Today’s highlight: "Rediscovering Black Portraiture", a moving and imaginative journey through a millennium of Black representation in Western art. Led by artist and performer Peter Brathwaite, this book traces his remarkable project that began during the early days of the COVID‑19 pandemic—creatively reimagining historical portraits of Black sitters and sharing them on social media under the caption “Rediscovering #blackportraiture through #gettymuseumchallenge.” 📘 This powerful volume brings together more than fifty of these striking recreations, pairing Brathwaite’s contemporary reinterpretations with the original artworks and expert essays that deepen our understanding of identity, visibility, and the African diaspora. Featuring works ranging from medieval Europe to the present day—including pieces by Georges Trubert, Jan Mostaert, Sonia Boyce, and Kehinde Wiley—the book confronts the ways Black individuals have been both represented and erased throughout art history. Brathwaite’s recreations don’t just echo the past—they challenge us to look again. To ask who gets to be seen, who gets to be remembered, and how art can reclaim stories long pushed to the margins. Urgent, insightful, and deeply human, "Rediscovering Black Portraiture" reminds us that Black subjects have always been part of the artistic canon—and that their stories deserve to be honored, studied, and uplifted. gty.art/4tJqKHg #BlackHistoryMonth #RediscoveringBlackPortraiture #PeterBrathwaite #ArtHistory #RepresentationMatters #AfricanDiaspora #GettyPublications

✨ Black History Month Spotlight ✨ This month, we honor the artists whose voices, visions, and histories continue to shape our cultural landscape. Today, we’re celebrating María Magdalena Campos-Pons, an extraordinary artist whose work amplifies stories long overlooked and invites us to see the world—and ourselves—with greater depth. 📖 "María Magdalena Campos-Pons: Behold" offers the first major critical look at her work in nearly twenty years, tracing a forty‑year career rooted in memory, migration, identity, and ancestral connection. Born in Cuba and working across the United States, Campos-Pons blends photography, sculpture, film, performance, and spiritual traditions—from feminism to Santería—to create art that’s as layered as the histories it holds. Her autobiographical practice honors her Nigerian and Chinese ancestors while confronting the complexities of race, belonging, and agency. Her work doesn’t just tell stories—it urges change. It asks us to reflect, to reckon, and to behold the beauty and truth found in every lived experience. This book is a powerful tribute to an artist whose voice continues to reshape how we see art, history, and each other. #BlackHistoryMonth #MaríaMagdalenaCamposPons #Behold #ArtHistory #ContemporaryArt #WomenInArt #CulturalHeritage #GettyPublications gty.art/4riaxY0
