I refused to work with a 11M+ subs youtuber.
A while ago my friend who is a very experienced editor (he works with multiple 30M+ subs creators) asked me for help with editing his client's videos.
At first I was just cutting, assembling the timeline and adding music, and he was adding vfx, sfx and doing the final polishes.
We kept this workflow for a few videos and everything was going smoothly.
With time, I was making more and more, and finally after a few more videos, I was making them from start to finish alone.
The videos were getting 8M-12M views each, very regular weekly work, steady income of $2200 from just this client, little revision notes, the client was happy...
Life was beautiful.
By then I already worked on around 15 videos for this client.
Can you guess what happened next?
My friend casually mentioned to the client that the last videos were made by me, not him.
The client was ok with it, he was like "👍"
and then came the next video...
257 notes...
Those weren't even simple tweaks, it took me almost 2 whole days to complete them all.
Finally, I submitted the V2.
107 notes on V2...
I thought "well, everyone sometimes has a worse day".
But then, on the next video, the same thing happened...
And the next...
Not only suddenly there were 200+ notes everytime, but also now some of them were getting ridiculous
Notes like:
"this whole video is so bad, every single thing was better before you"
"just change everything, this is so bad"
"the whole video needs to be redone from the start"
(remember that before he knew it was me editing I already edited like 15 videos for him and there were no problems at all)
It was so stressful, during christmas when everybody was with their family I was sat at the computer editing it, worried that I would not finish before the deadline.
My friend still wanted me to edit the next videos, but I refused, I literally was starting shaking when talking about that client (I'm dead serious).
When the client knew my friend was editing it again, suddenly everything came back to normal.
Even though we used the same assets, style etc.
Even my friend said that our videos were indistinguishable in style.
So what can we learn from this?
Big part of your success with a client is how he perceives you.
If you're just a random for him, sometimes even if you make even the sickest edit, you still can lose.
