About “OITAWASHIYA” I’ve said this many times, but the line that shocked me the most in Demon Slayer is, without a doubt, “oitawashiya.” There’s probably no single English word that can fully capture it. But don’t be sad about that—I think it’s simply a difference in culture. One thing I really like about English is how something that would just be “kawaii” in Japanese gets expressed in so many different ways: cute adorable lovely pretty so cute super cute cuteee cutie precious baby smol charming endearing sweet Personally, I really like the word charming. Seeing this many variations for “cute” makes me feel like English-speaking cultures are really big on expressing praise. And there are nuances for other words, too—like “smart.” I remember once saying “he’s clever,” and being told that it can sometimes imply being sly or cunning, so “smart” would be better. Learning these nuances is honestly so fun. I wish I could grab my high school self and tell them to study harder…😭 So, what is “OITAWASHIYA”? It’s a Japanese word used when you feel a quiet, almost painful sense of empathy toward someone. It goes beyond simple pity, carrying tenderness, compassion, and a trace of sadness. It’s the kind of word that slips out when you truly reflect on someone’s situation and inner feelings. But when Yoriichi says it, it takes on a slightly different weight. Among Kokushibo fans, some people use it in that original sense, but others use it more lightly—like a soft “oh no…” said with a hand to the forehead and a small, helpless laugh (often with a 😭). It’s the kind of comment you’d see when Kokushibo does something embarrassing or exposes his vulnerabilities. Still, it’s not quite the same as mocking him. Of course, some people do use it that way—but that’s not all it is. In his memories, Kokushibo speaks to Yoriichi as if he’s still there, pouring out words to the “other half” he could never truly kill. For hundreds of years, he carries that presence with him—and even in his final moments, he is still thinking of Yoriichi as he fades away. There’s something undeniably tragic about that… and deeply human, too. That’s why the line, “Oitawashiya, aniue…” feels so painfully fitting. To put it bluntly, Kokushibo is one of the biggest brother-obsessed characters in the entire series. And I absolutely love him for it.
