I get messages from minor hockey coaches saying they can’t work on some fundamental skills because parents get mad and say “my kids way to advanced for that” Here’s two NHL 1st rounders , working on and getting better at…receiving passes. #detailsmatter #mindset

A youth hockey director sent me this email he received from a parent. This is not a parody, it's an actual email.

In your career, the number of parents who create unnecessary problems, drama and team issues are minuscule compared to number of parents who have raised great young people. Keep perspective and take the time to demonstrate thankfulness to those who support their athlete, the team

Leading mature people… When your culture is strong enough, committed team members and coaches will work for a while with those who don’t buy in. But if they continue to choose not to align with the standards, then regardless of how talented, they will be respectfully removed.

Interesting read for ALL Coaches and Parents. 🗣️“I cannot & will not compromise the integrity of my decisions based on a parent’s political pressure or position. I believe strongly in the value of athletics, that being a part of a team is a privilege, & playing time is earned.”

"So parents, I write this to implore you: we’re losing good ones. Good coaches and good teachers are leaving the profession because it’s so hard to do it with integrity." bit.ly/2T3rvsI #newblog #coaches #parents

Coaches and Parents... Every time your athlete faces challenges it provides a chance for personal growth and becoming stronger. Be thankful if they happen while they still have you walking along side of them and showing the way. Be a strong example.

This is great, I'd add that as parents we have to be ok with our kids failing in the short term on tasks or activities in order to allow them to develop these important life skills.

Great article on how to raise a problem solving child called, "Raise a Problem-Solving Kid by Talking Less and Questioning More." I think we could all use these questions to encourage our kids to think for themselves more! offspring.lifehacker.com/raise-a-proble…

Can sports teach character? It depends on intentional leadership and modeling of coaches and parents.

Setting high standards is not enough. Teach your athletes how to reach them by defining clearly, modeling so they can see what it looks like, confront incorrect behavior because you care about the team and the athlete and reward the behaviors that align with the standards.

We have to hope that things don’t always come easy to our kids. Kids that have learned to compete for playing time, find a role on a team, to solve problems/conflicts on their own and who have learned to embrace the struggle to learn new skills will be much stronger in real life
