GM $IOTA fam! In yesterday’s Nano Talk I told you about a project I found on LinkedIn. Here’s what I found: MISSION – EU Project for Maritime Just-in-Time Optimization The EU-funded project MISSION (MaritIme juSt in time optimiSatION) aims to make maritime transport more efficient, safer, and more sustainable. Led by the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), around 30 partners from 11 countries including ports, shipping lines, research institutes, and the IOTA Foundation are developing a real-time platform that optimizes port calls. The key concept is Just-in-Time arrivals: ships should only approach the port when berths and services are ready, minimizing waiting time at anchor. Studies suggest this can cut fuel consumption by 10–20%, reducing both costs and emissions. In simulations, efficiency gains even reached 23%. Goals and scope MISSION develops a cross-sectoral communication and logistics system for the maritime domain. By digitally connecting shipping companies, terminals, authorities, and service providers, it creates transparency and synchronizes operations. Five large-scale demonstrations across six major European ports (Valencia, Piraeus, Genoa, Trieste, Hamina-Kotka, Klaipeda) will validate the technology. Benefits include: ■ Efficiency: fewer delays, smarter coordination, better use of port resources ■ Sustainability: reduced fuel consumption (10–20% savings per port call) and less air pollution in port cities ■ Safety: better situational awareness reduces congestion and accidents ■ Standardization: open APIs and interoperable solutions aligned with European data initiatives (e.g., Gaia-X, IDS) How it works Rather than replacing existing IT systems, MISSION connects them through a shared data space. Ports and vessels keep their current tools, which are linked via a data connector framework. Trusted data exchange is secured with distributed ledger technology provided by IOTA. This ensures that critical information such as ETA updates, berth reservations, or customs documents is immutable and verifiable by all stakeholders. Optimization is powered by AI and advanced simulation models. For example, the VISIR-2 model calculates optimal ship routes. Machine learning predicts delays and arrival times, helping authorities and service providers adjust operations dynamically. If a ship faces heavy seas, the system adapts its predicted time of arrival, allowing ports to reschedule in real-time and reduce costly idle times. Partnership with IOTA The IOTA Foundation is an official partner of MISSION. IOTA contributes its expertise in distributed ledgers, digital identities, and secure data sharing. The project builds directly on TWIN (Trade & Information Worldwide Network), another IOTA-driven initiative. TWIN provides a trust framework for global trade, and within MISSION it enables the secure exchange of port call data. Using IOTA’s ledger, all participants share the same verified records, reducing disputes and ensuring data integrity. Additionally, MISSION leverages IOTA’s work on decentralized identities. Each stakeholder in the maritime ecosystem can be assigned a digital identity with specific permissions, enabling trusted collaboration between shipping lines, ports, customs, and service providers. TWIN vs. MISSION While both initiatives share a foundation in IOTA’s technology, their focus differs: ■ TWIN is a global infrastructure for trade and information exchange. It connects supply chains, customs, authorities, and industries worldwide. Its scope includes digital product passports, certificates, and financial integrations ■ MISSION is a targeted EU research project (2024–2027) focused specifically on optimizing European port calls. It applies the TWIN framework to the maritime sector, testing concrete use cases in real ports.
