Not sure I agree with Ethiopia parallel to Iran - multiple armed actors, atrocities on many sides, messy setup in Ethiopia vs single obviously terrible actor in Iran - opposing Iran's regime perceived in Europe as aligning with US hawks which both the governments and residents of Europe avoid; not so with Ethiopia - protesting Iran carries some personal risk - claims of Islamophobia, potential violence; protesting Ethiopia carries no risk (and also doesn't bring any social reward, of the type protesting against Israel brings) Also, Russia likely perceived as lost cause too, yet plenty of protests in Europe against them.

@gilad Generalizing my US theory a bit, what if Europeans basically think of Iran as, more or less, a lost cause, but Israel as part of West and thus influenceable via protest. Comparison for Iran is maybe Ethiopia where ~500K died in Tigray war and basically no one protested.

More civilians now killed in Iran in 2 weeks––than all civilians in the Gaza war over 2 years (and many of those "civilians" were outright terrorists). The protestor class? silence. Revealing. Not shockng

Dunno, I'm mystified. But maybe some combination of: - Historical guilt resulting in well -meaning recoil from violence - Significant local immigrant population from areas that are in conflict with Israel - Naivete wrt geopolitics in general and in the Middle East in particular - Lack of visibility into Iran vs more transparency into Gaza - Economic interests But I'm still puzzled about the silence of major organizations and governments, Iran deserves better

@gilad Could be. What’s your theory of what’s going on in Europe?

@adam_messinger Most of Europe does not back Israel though, and yet protests for Gaza were louder there, and speaking up about Iran is weaker; ditto UN and large NGOs. So there are other underlying reasons?

@wolfejosh Isn't the big difference that the US backs Israel and thus US citizens feel they bear some responsibility for Israel actions and see a route to change via political protest? On the other hand, US has long opposed Iran and thus domestic political pressure isn't likely to help?

Our browser, ChatGPT Atlas, saves me a huge amount of copy-pasting. E.g. I'm encountering an error in GitHub Actions. Instead of copy-pasting it and explaining the context of what I'm trying to do, I just ask "How do I fix this?" and it has the context and my memories to fix it.
