As we discuss in the article, the key question is what the equilibrium of Platform Federalism will look like. Will we see a stable balance between platforms and states? Or a chaotic patchwork of conflicting rules? The jury is still out.

The cases of X/Twitter and Telegram show that even the most powerful platforms can be challenged by state power when seen as violating national interests. At the same time, the global backlash reveals the continuing appeal of an open Internet.

Platform Federalism is a power-sharing arrangement where countries seek to balance the benefits of global connectivity with the ability to enforce local laws and norms. It's a negotiation of sovereignty in the digital age.

As a researcher studying the relationship between global platforms and states, it's striking to see the issues at the heart of my work suddenly at the center of public debate. The blocking of X/Twitter in Brazil and the indictment of Telegram's founder are cases in point. 🧵
