Our latest paper is out! Pattern recognition receptors detect bacterial signals and trigger an immune response. However, they use different pathways to inhibit metabolism. This is particularly useful for controlling intracellular bacteria, which are protected from antimicrobials.

Knowing that hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 is conserved in animal evolution, our studies may shed light on evolutionarily conserved mechanisms that control the fate of dietary lipids in the gut, and on the metabolic causes of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Interestingly, intestinal lipid retention induces local inflammation and is associated with other hallmarks of inflammatory bowel disease.

We found that a single transcription factor, hepatocyte nuclear factor 4, acts in different tissues to coordinate the balance between lipid storage and export in the gut. Dysregulation of this inter-organ crosstalk leads to lipid retention in the intestine and reduced body fat.
