With nearly 6 years working in the GameFi and crypto gaming industry, I’ve witnessed almost every phase of its ups and downs.
From the explosive era of play-to-earn, when millions of users entered games to make money, to the downturn when many projects’ tokenomics proved unsustainable. I’ve also seen many different models emerge in this space, from teams genuinely trying to build real games to projects that were essentially ponzi or MLM schemes disguised as GameFi.
Personally, I’ve gone through almost all of those stages.
But looking at the current cycle, I believe crypto gaming will make a strong comeback, potentially in a much more mature form than in the previous cycle.
There are several clear reasons for this.
First, gameplay is finally becoming the priority.
In the last cycle, many projects focused too heavily on tokens and short-term profits, while gameplay was neglected. As a result, players joined for the money rather than for the game itself. Once the inflow of new capital slowed down, the entire system quickly collapsed.
Now, many studios are returning to the core of what makes a game successful: building real gameplay depth and long-term player engagement.
Second, in-game economic models (game economy) are being designed more carefully.
After the painful lessons from inflationary token models in the past, many projects are experimenting with more sustainable approaches such as:
free-to-play combined with blockchain
hybrid economies that mix Web2 and Web3 elements
or even games that don’t require a token at the early stage
This allows games to grow based on real players, rather than purely speculative capital.
Third, product quality is clearly improving.
Graphics, world design, gameplay systems, and overall depth are gradually approaching the standards of the traditional gaming industry.
This is important because if crypto gaming wants to grow long term, it cannot rely solely on crypto users. It must also attract traditional gamers.
That said, I still maintain a cautiously optimistic view.
Not every project will succeed. The upcoming gaming cycle will still see many failures, and there will likely still be projects driven mainly by hype and short-term capital.
However, history has shown one thing consistently:
the teams that keep building during difficult market conditions are often the ones that create the biggest projects in the next cycle.
So if you’re interested in crypto gaming, the best thing you can do right now is not to chase hype, but to pay attention to and get involved early with teams that are truly building products.
A new gaming cycle may be approaching.
And hopefully this time, crypto gaming will be far more mature and sustainable than the last one.
What do you think?
