@tryna_do_rite@ukhadds I think we know the unfortunate answer. Multiple uses of the phrase “during the pandemic”, and references to “the lockdown” are pretty good tells.
@ukhadds Is there a scientific reason they chose not to wear respirator masks for this presentation? When people outside the Covid Conscientious community see this, they will think they don't need to mask indoors either. Clean & filtered air is essential, of course- but no respies?
It was a great honour to be part of the PERFORM team that was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry 2025 Faraday Horizon Prize for advances in understanding the physicochemical properties of exhaled aerosol and their impact on the transmissibility of respiratory pathogens.
SARS-CoV-2 continues to transmit at high rates presently, especially in middle America.
We're in a 12th wave, and what's important to know is that *every* region continues to experience surges sooner or late.
We are very much #DuringCOVID.

@ParentMishmash@_Norwegian_Blue@MariaMGillespie I’m just chiming in with a broader disclaimer about the Sipmask product itself, since her hedging around its risks often gets lost in downstream recommendations.
@ParentMishmash@_Norwegian_Blue@MariaMGillespie And to be clear, this isn’t a critique of her or her videos. She does use hedging language to acknowledge leakage risk and offer mitigation strategies.
How do you drink safely while wearing a mask? Start with a SIP valve from sipmask.com, and then check out these tips I learned from the Fit Testing for Everyone community:
@ParentMishmash@_Norwegian_Blue@MariaMGillespie Punching an opening into a certified N95 is not an upgrade. A Sipmask is a deliberate compromise that belongs in a last-resort, “if you absolutely must” framing, not as a default recommendation or general upgrade for people who still have safer options.
@ParentMishmash@_Norwegian_Blue@MariaMGillespie That doesn’t make the choice illegitimate in hard cases, but it does make it something that requires clear disclosure rather than being presented as all upside.
@_Norwegian_Blue@MariaMGillespie Snow tires are a safety upgrade that doesn’t add a hidden failure mode. A respirator mod can. In hard scenarios you either upgrade, change the plan, or accept the tradeoff fully informed. Snow tires make a good system better. A hole in a respirator changes what the system is.
@_Norwegian_Blue@MariaMGillespie And to my core point, that choice only makes sense with fully informed consent, not casual recommendations or hype. In hard situations it may be the least bad option someone knowingly accepts, but that decision only makes sense with full information about the tradeoffs.
@ParentMishmash@MariaMGillespie The concern isn’t people in true corner cases making informed tradeoffs. It’s casual, blanket recommendations like “everyone needs a Sipmask, they’re awesome,” especially to people who aren’t in those situations and don’t need to accept the added risk.
@ParentMishmash@MariaMGillespie These can include front-loading hydration, electrolytes, and calories before exposure, reducing how often or how long intake is needed during exposure, and taking brief, planned breaks in cleaner air rather than opening the mask in place.
