On this Terry Fox Day, it’s with a heavy heart that I’m sharing some personal news regarding my health. In early July, I found out I have an aggressive form of breast cancer: Triple positive, invasive ductal carcinoma. On August 14th, I started six months of chemotherapy to kick this disease, followed by surgery and radiation. On the recommendation of my oncologist, I’m trying to stay working for my amazingly supportive employer, Global BC. However, I need to obviously consider my energy levels and overall wellness moving forward. And while I will have to slow down from taking on my usual passions such as journalism, teaching, mentoring or my own doctoral studies, I hope to return to my old self in the next couple of years. I’ll now be a more active voice in early detection of breast cancer, and the very real dangers surrounding dense breast tissue. It’s terribly unfortunate that, alongside countless media colleagues in addition to the current fight for my life, I find myself in the crosshairs of online criminal harassment and stalking on social media. I am incredibly grateful for my family, friends and colleagues who have rallied around me during this extremely difficult time. I am so thankful to be surrounded by this much love and support. Thank you. ❤️
