Souness's parents lived in Saughton Mains, Edinburgh, where I grew up. I got his autograph at his mother's door way back in 1978. I was 12 and he had just played for Scotland against England at Hampden in the home internationals that year. Me and my pals guessed that he would visit his mother before heading back to Liverpool after the game. So we waited outside his mum's stair, four of us, sitting on the grass. Sure enough he pulled up in a car with his brother driving. We were in literal awe of him as he got out and headed into the building, saying hello to us as he did. I was chosen to go to the door and knock and ask for an autograph. He opened it and appeared like a giant. 'Can we have your autograph, please?' I asked. 'Wait there son,' he said. Moments later he returned with four signed picture cards of himself. I recall that later we walked round to the other side of his mother's building and could see through her kitchen window the England number-3 shirt of Mick Mills hanging up, obviously having just been washed. Fast forward to 1986 and, working security, I was his bodyguard at a boxing event in Livingston when he was manager of Rangers. He was a pure gentleman then too. Souness is a real one.

I lived dangerously by writing an essay on the Falklands when I was studying Argentine history at night school in Buenos Aires. I am still too ill and woozy to recreate my argument as coherently as I'd like. But here are a few scattered points. 1/

I'm politically homeless. Didn't vote in the last election, have never been the member of a party. Because I studied English at Cambridge just after @andyburnham and was a child of the Madchester scene 🙂, I am culturally closer to him than any PM we've ever had. But deep down,

Andy Burnham is as good a communicator as I've ever seen coming into Downing Street, so impressed with the comms configuration: He's not taking playbook from any British PM, he's trying to build a feeling of hope a la early Reagan, first term Clinton, both terms Obama - paint a happy future, raise peoples' souls. Purely in terms of the positioning it is outstanding. PS It could all go wrong quickly but this is always true.

I remember Tony Blair walking from Downing Street to parliament for the Queen's speech, mingling with ordinary people along the way, when he'd been in the job a couple of weeks. All very upbeat and relatable. The test will be whether Burnham can do this a year from now.

When I said I was going to do politics differently, I meant it. Yesterday I spent a couple of hours in Cardiff city centre inviting people to ask me anything about my plans for the UK.

Manchester City Nostalgia & Memorabilia
Happy 55th Birthday to former City striker Carl Griffiths! 🎉💙 Griffiths' journey to Maine Road was built on hard work and goals. After making his debut for Shrewsbury Town in 1988, he became one of the Football League's most prolific strikers during a challenging spell for the club. His outstanding 1992/93 season saw him score 27 league goals, finish as the Third Division's joint-top scorer, and earn a place in the PFA Team of the Year. Those performances convinced Brian Horton to bring him to Manchester City in October 1993 in a £500,000 move. Griffiths went on to score four Premier League goals in 18 appearances across the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons before later joining Portsmouth as part of a deal the saw Kit Symons arrive at Maine Road.

@DanNeidle What does “wealth tax” actually look like. What’s the definition of wealthy?

Andy Burnham is right not to rule out any taxes. Ruling stuff out is what got Labour into such a mess they ended up raising employer NICs (the Worst tax increase). Best to do this properly, and just not talk/leak about tax until the Budget.

I've been on Twitter / X for 20 years. I've loved every minute of it. Social media has saved my life. When determining whether to make a post and if the post will create value, I like the Rotary International "4 Way Test": - Is it TRUE - Is it FAIR (i.e. it doesn't harm anyone) - Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS - Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned. Just following this test I've made so many friends here, tested ideas, and have even built businesses and written books because of content created here. I try to never skip this test before posting. Maybe this is corny. But I just wanted to say this. Thank you, X.
