@roaddiets Factually just not true. The movie and TV sector for example has contracted to its lowest levels since the mid 90s. You then cite two banks while skipping the biggest JPM which now has 8000 more employees in Texas than they do in NYC.

The paradox of NYC right now is that it’s not “dying” in the sense that it’s losing population of people who want to live and enjoy the benefits of living in a city with rich food and culture.
But it is dying in that it’s losing the economic engines that have always paid for these things as it swaps out more tax payers with more tax revenue need.
Policymakers are still running the economy as if it’s the 80s with Wall Street: financial sector tied locationally
It’s really not good.

@Izengabe_ @JustinBrannan Did some napkin math with new budget it’s over 50k per student. One thing I do know is that public school teachers do not get paid very well and they teach upwards of 20 students per 1 teacher. Thats a lot of cash per classroom…..

@JustinBrannan NYC does have the option to pay for capital projects & pension liabilities out of operating budget but you prefer to borrow the money for those things & use the operating budget to pay for free hotel rooms for illegal migrants & spend $42k per student in the public schools.

NYC has to balance its budget by law and history. Everything changed after the 1970s fiscal crisis. Unlike the federal government, NYC can’t run an operating deficit. We can only borrow for capital projects. So when someone says, “the city just keeps spending on debt,” that’s just not how municipal finance works. That’s just not how it works. By law, NYC must balance its budget and invest the finite revenue it collects, NYC does not spend on debt. A budget that grows in line with the economy is healthy, not reckless. Suggesting that it’s “exploded” due to reckless spending or radical progressive policies like public parks and schools are simply false.
