Incompetent zoomer filmmaker begins and ends with a literal psychotherapy session so that he can explain to you the mental state of the main character, and by mental state I mean trauma. He pairs this with flashbacks so that you understand the female therapist also has trauma. It’s not just her patient. She has it too, and she even has a trauma totem, which you can guess what will happen with that. You could probably delete the first 30 minutes of this movie — of most movies — and just discover the characters through action and it would be a LOT better. Although in this case you would also have to delete the last 30 minutes and some of the parts in the middle. There is one touching moment where you notice that Chiwetel is wearing New Balance dadcore shoes and you feel sorry for him. You just think, this loser, he’s never gonna make it, no one likes him. And that’s all the exposition you really need because you can see how the guy behaves and the pathetic shoes he’s wearing. You don’t need to hear him explain the backstory about his divorce, but Kane Parsons thinks you need to hear that and he also thinks you need to see the flashbacks about the female therapist having a crazy mom. After this first act you start to lose hope because you realize the backrooms aren’t going to be something creepy, not even a tedious exploration of “liminal space” as a theme, they're just going to be a projection of the characters’ inner lives, an allegorical space where catharsis can be sought, and if there is a monster at the end it will probably be the monster of the Self, maybe even literally, a character will confront a twisted mirror self which can only be vanquished by selecting the correct therapeutic symbol from the pop psychology menu, just like happens 4 or 5 times a year in movies written by WOMEN

Try this, just for giggles and grins: rewatch Eyes Wide Shut, and remember that its writer Frederic Raphael regarded the novel EWS was based on as pure dream narrative. Also remember people like Martin Scorsese and Roger Ebert saw EWS as a dream narrative. Then pretend that Kubrick reimagined the original dream story to be psychological horror movie about a guy whose wife left him for a richer and more powerful older man and it drove him insane, and that's why all the interactions with other people seem so weird and unrealistic, whereas the scenes of Bill alone on the streets or in his office do not. Try to pretend that just like the events in Traumnovelle, there is no Christmas party, there is no Ziegler, no Central Park West flat, there is no Nick Nightingale, there is no Domino or Sally, there is no orgy or costume shop, and there is no toy store reconciliation. There are just the compensatory dreams, fantasies and delusions of a mind shattered by jealousy and grief. Then remember that Kubrick's own ex-wife turned him on to Traumnovelle, and that some of the elements added into EWS come from writings following his own failed marriage, which was marred by his fears of her infidelity ("FIDELIOS"). Oh, one last fun thing to try: make believe that Mandy was a prostitute that Bill himself murdered during a psychotic episode, the one where he conjured up the whole narrative with Ziegler and the party.

The completely unsupportable "Toy Store theory" is one of the conspiracy theories that tells you a lot more about the theorists than the conspiracists. Bill and Alice want Helena to wander the aisle because they don't want her listening to their conversation. Helena looks back because she knows her parents are upset with each other and is looking for reassurance. Any parent would instantly recognize that. At no point is there any contact or signal - whatsoever - with the two shoppers and Bill, Alice or Helena. They don't even seem to realize they are there, and vice versa. And the notion that a mother would hand over her only child to a trafficking ring without going into full-blown hysterics - or even merely acknowledging the act - is something I can't possibly imagine that any morally sane person would even imagine, never mind endorse. And please don't tell me about some Hollywood has-been with his magic Joseph Smith goggles discovering Kubrick's lost golden tablets. If you can't smell a grift that blatant when the vapors waft up, then I can't help you.

If someone murdered Kubrick, a 70 year-old former chain smoker in poor health, it wasn't over Eyes Wide Shut, a film faithfully adapting a book from 1926 that was made into three other movies before EWS. Movies Kubrick consciously drew on for his ritual scene. Not to mention dozens of similar scenes in 70s movies.

The reason most so-called "exposés" of Eyes Wide Shut are worse than useless is because the grifters making them don't know anything about symbolism, other than what they cut and pasted from other "exposés." Case in point, the double-headed eagle long predates Freemasonry - like, by thousands of years - and the eagles with the crown was the symbol of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. EWS is based on an Austrian novel and the man hitting on Alice is Hungarian. Probably what Kubrick was really getting at here, no?
