I went to Laos on my first ever backpacking trip, solo as a 21 year old. This was 10 years ago when e-sim data plans weren't a thing and there was no way to get hold of family without an internet cafe. I even went to Vang Vieng where this incident took place. It was part of a 3 month trip where: - I partied a lot - shared rooms with strangers I met that day (4 of us in one bed) - took LSD - drank booze buckets - had a gun pulled on me - many nights I can't remember - memories to last a lifestyle This was one of the most transformitive experiences of my life. When you want a wild experience, sometimes things get wild. If you don't have your wits about you, you might get swallowed. It's sad what's happened to these girls. But the same thing could happen at a Uni frat party. If a teenager asked me, "should I still go backpacking to Laos?" My answer would be yes absolutely.
