A Russian friend told me the other day about her holiday in Budapest years ago. Her and her friends met some Australians at the hotel bar. They were getting on really well. Until they asked her, “you must be really scared to live in Russia?” “No.” She replied mildly confused. “I love my country. I have a good life. A good job. I can travel wherever I want.” The Australians stopped talking to them after that. Even ignored them in the hotel lobby the next morning. I suspect they couldn’t take the idea that everything they thought they knew about the world was a lie. Many people are like that. It’s insane that Tucker Carlson going to a supermarket and a metro station in Moscow can be seen as some radical piece of journalism. But the perception of Russia in the minds of those in the west, is so totally nuts, I guess it is.
