#WorkersDay2026: Broken Promises, Shattered Hopes: The Nigerian Worker's Burden Under the Tinubu Administration. Every first day of May, nations across the world pause to honour the dignity of labour and the men and women whose sweat and toil sustain civilisation. In Nigeria, Workers' Day has always carried a particular poignancy, a moment to celebrate the resilience of a workforce that endures much and receives little. But as we mark this year's commemoration, I write not with celebration in my heart, but with grief. Grief for the Nigerian worker who was promised renewed hope and received instead renewed hardship. A Slogan Betrayed. "Renewed Hope" - those two words carried the dreams of millions of Nigerians who trooped to the polls in 2023. They were words that promised a departure from the suffering of previous years; a promise that the government would finally work for the people. Today, as we assess nearly three years of the Tinubu administration, it is painfully clear that what was renewed was not hope, but hardship. What was refreshed was not the fortunes of the Nigerian people, but the pockets of those in power. The Nigerian worker, the teacher, the nurse, the factory hand, the civil servant, the artisan, has been the primary victim of an administration that, by all observable evidence, is far more interested in increasing the revenue at its disposal than in improving the lives of the citizens it governs. Trillions Saved, But Nothing Felt. The fuel subsidy removal was a necessary step, recklessly executed. Let me be clear: the removal of the fuel subsidy was, in principle, a policy that many, including myself, had long advocated. The subsidy had become a fiscal haemorrhage that enriched cabal middlemen while denying the government of the resources needed for development. Its removal was necessary and overdue. But the manner in which the Tinubu administration executed this policy was irresponsible and callous. On the day of inauguration, with no preparation, no safety nets, no cushioning mechanisms, and no transition plan for ordinary Nigerians, the President announced the end of the subsidy. The price of fuel skyrocketed. Transportation costs doubled and tripled overnight. The cost of food and basic goods hit the roof. The Nigerian worker, who was already struggling to survive on a salary eroded by years of inflation, was suddenly confronted with a cost of living that made mere survival feel like a luxury. A responsible government would have spent the preceding months preparing Nigerians for this transition, establishing social safety nets, empowering the most vulnerable, and ensuring that the pain of reform was shared equitably. This administration did none of that. It simply removed the subsidy and left the Nigerian worker to drown. Trillions were ostensibly saved, but nothing gained by the people. The fuel subsidy removal freed up enormous sums of money. Billions of dollars that had previously been committed to keeping pump prices artificially low were suddenly available. Nigerians, who had suffered the immediate consequences of the removal, were right to ask: Where has this saved money gone? What has been done with it to improve their lives? The answer is deeply troubling. Rather than being channelled into programmes that would directly benefit Nigerians, infrastructure that serves the people, healthcare, education, or an economic stimulus, these funds have been shared among the various tiers of government. The bulk of the federal government's share, disturbingly, appears to be financing the controversial $11 billion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. As desirable as this project was, it was not subjected to competitive bidding or due process. It was awarded to a company owned by a man that President Tinubu himself has publicly acknowledged as his business partner. This is not governance, it is the brazen conversion of public resources for private enrichment.

This is a scientific approach that should not be reduced to cheap political talking points. What matters is simple: Did the system adapt? Did it improve outcomes? If the answer is yes… Then the system is working. And that is how real progress is built.

Operation wetie erupted in 1965 because the ruling party in the Western Region rigged elections so brazenly, so completely, that the opposition had nothing left to lose. That is documented Nigerian history. Makinde cited it as a cautionary tale at a democracy summit. His message was simple: do not push people to the wall. The APC’s response is to call it incitement. Ask security agencies to clamp down on a sitting governor for quoting history. Let that land. A party that controls the presidency, the National Assembly, most governorships, and is now engineering the collapse of opposition platforms through courts and INEC, is telling you that a historical warning is the real threat to democracy. Not the one-party consolidation or the legal warfare against ADC. Not even the legislative capture but a speech in Ibadan. About what happened the last time someone thought they could rule without opposition. The same APC that cannot explain why opposition parties are being systematically strangled found the time and energy to call Makinde unworthy of office. The projection is loud. If the warning offends you more than the conditions being warned about, you are not defending democracy. You are defending the monopoly and Nigerians are watching.

PRESS STATEMENT INCITING VIOLENCE - GOVERNOR MAKINDE, YOU ARE UNWORTHY OF THE OFFICE YOU OCCUPY While addressing a summit of opposition political parties in Ibadan, yesterday, Saturday, April 25, 2026, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state invoked the bloody history of “Operation Wetie” to incite Nigerians to violence over his baseless and senseless allegation of the country’s descent into a one party state. The All Progressives Congress (APC) categorically condemns Governor Makinde’s incitement as reckless, and a clear and present threat to peace and national security. It is particularly disturbing for a sitting Governor who bears constitutional responsibility as the Chief Security Officer of his state to conjure up one of the darkest episodes of political violence in Nigeria’s history to threaten violence against the people and government of Nigeria. By his incitement to violence, Makinde has showed himself to be unworthy of the high office of Governor that he occupies. Makinde’s violent rhetoric cannot be dismissed as mere opposition posturing. His statement risks fueling anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness capable of undermining national stability. We therefore call on all relevant security and intelligence agencies to take this unfortunate development seriously and act to safeguard lives, property, and defend Nigeria’s democratic order. Makinde must be reminded that constitutional immunity from prosecution is not immunity from accountability for threats or acts against national security. No individual, however highly placed, should have the power to threaten or endanger the lives and safety of Nigerians or upend the country’s hard-won democratic governance under the guise of political commentary. The APC, again, vehemently rejects attempts by confused opposition leaders to frame their internal shambles in alarmist narratives about so-called one-party domination. The opposition parties are victims of self-inflicted injuries arising from anti-democratic practices, miserably poor leadership, internal contradictions, utter disregard for due process and the rule of law, persistent factionalization, and the desperate and dissonant presidential ambitions of their leaders. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was destroyed by Atiku Abubakar’s ruthless confiscation of the PDP’s 2023 presidential ticket in violation of the party’s constitutionally entrenched rotational zoning formula. The Labour Party (LP) was effectively subverted by the restless nomadic disposition of its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, permanently swinging from one party to another in search of free and uncontested presidential ticket. The African Democratic Congress (ADC), so-called coalition platform, was basically stillborn, strangled by the reckless robbery of that party’s leadership by the same band of marauding opposition figures, never willing to remain and build their parties but always quick to use the revolving door on to the next available party. They have left nothing but desolation in opposition trail. At the APC, we are confident that Nigerians are discerning and recognize that a party so grossly unable to manage its own internal affairs cannot be entrusted with the governance of Africa’s most populous and important country. These opposition leaders and their coalition of confusion have not put anything forward by way of an alternative vision for Nigeria’s development. All they have in their arsenal is fear mongering built on false narratives about the APC. Our great Party rejects the veiled expectation of opposition leaders that the APC would help them manage their internal affairs. We bear no such duty and will not provide any such leadership consulting services to them. And we will not yield to blackmail to abdicate our duty to our Party to plan, organize and mobilize to compete effectively in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Our democracy is founded on the idea of competing visions of governance and development. Their failure to articulate any alternative vision or policy framework to the visionary and transformative policies of the APC-led administration is on them, and Nigerians are justified in rejecting their gangster antics designed to threaten their way to electoral victory. Nigeria’s democratic space remains as robust as can be. With nearly two dozen parties registered and participating freely in the country’s electoral process, the opposition’s unjustifiable attacks on our great Party, and their threats of violence is nothing but primitive capitulation, an admission of incompetence, and a peremptory alibi for what is looking to be a fantastic rebuke at the hands of the Nigerian electorate come 2027. Our great party, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda for the peace, unity, and prosperity of all Nigerians. Today, with the aim of safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, we hosted a national summit that brought together opposition political party leaders, members of civil society and other relevant stakeholders. As I said in my welcome remarks, democracy is not defined by the success of one party. It is defined by the existence of real alternatives, by the ability of citizens to choose, and by the confidence that those choices matter. So, let me once again, thank everyone who participated in our deliberations and ensured that the Ibadan Declaration 2026 was birthed. Read my welcome address here seyimakinde.com/national-summi…

At today’s National Opposition Summit in Ibadan, Oyo State, we spoke with one voice, fearless, and unmistakable: the time has come to forge a united opposition, bound by purpose and driven by the sacred duty to defend and sustain our democracy. This is not a choice; it is an obligation we owe to Nigeria and to generations yet unborn. I extend my profound gratitude to our gracious Chief Host, Governor @seyimakinde, and to the resilient and warm-hearted people of Oyo State for providing the ground upon which this historic resolve has been rekindled. Oyo state has a history of being present when the politics of Nigeria is to be defined. -AA

IBADAN DECLARATION Communiqué issued at the end of Opposition Political Parties National Summit held on Saturday April 25, 2026 in Ibadan, Oyo State. Participating Opposition Parties in Nigeria, after an extensive deliberation on the collective threats that we face and the existential challenges facing our country under the stranglehold of the oppressive and anti-democratic All Progressives Congress (APC) and given the need for urgent, collective action to rescue our nation and the destiny of over 200 million compatriots, hereby resolve as follows: 1. That we shall resist all machinations by the APC to foist a one-party State on Nigeria and fight for the survival of multi-party democracy in our country. 2. That despite the onslaughts and manoeuvrings of the ruling party, the APC to impose President Bola Tinubu as the sole Presidential candidate in 2027; we shall field candidates and contest the 2027 Presidential and other elections. 3. That we shall work towards fielding one Presidential Candidate for the 2027 elections, which shall be agreed and supported by all participating opposition parties to rescue our nation and her long suffering masses. 4. That the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, having shown bias and partisanship in favour of the ruling APC, should not conduct the 2027 general elections as Nigerians across board have lost confidence in him and his capacity to guarantee the required neutrality to deliver free, fair, transparent and credible elections. His continuous stay in office is vexatious and capable of triggering wide spread crisis in our nation. 5. That the National Assembly should immediately review the Electoral Act, 2026 to remove all sections that threaten the sanctity and integrity of the elections and run counter to constitutional provisions. 6. That all leading politicians that are being detained or harassed on bailable offfences be released with immediate effect and allowed to exercise their fundamental rights of participation and inclusivity as Nigerians. 7. That we consider the recent guidelines released by the INEC as obstacles, deliberately engineered to impose conditions and deadlines on the opposition parties. We therefore demand that INEC extends the deadline for primaries till the end of July, 2026. 8. The Summit commends Nigerians for their resilience and readiness to work with Opposition Parties to free our nation from State capture. 9. The National summit of Opposition Political Parties thank the Oyo State Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State for hosting the epochal event. SIGNED: Chairmen of Participating Opposition Parties.

Pleased to have been part of the Harvard Ministerial Leadership Forum which took place 19-22 April 2026. As part of the programme, I was privileged to meet various leaders including former president of Tanzania His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete. Part of the requirement for the programme was outlining the legacy goals of our administration by looking at the top priorities of the government, the top priorities of citizens and how our administration has worked to address both.

FG expands import ban to cement, fertiliser, soaps, others The Federal Government has revised its list of restricted imports, adding cement, fertiliser, soaps and several other products, increasing the total number of affected categories to 17. This update was contained in a circular from the Federal Ministry of Finance, endorsed by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, following presidential approval of the 2026 fiscal policy framework. Titled “Approval for the Implementation of the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments,” the circular indicated that the new policy took effect on April 1, 2026, in line with the ECOWAS Common External Tariff. According to the document, “This is to confirm that His Excellency, Mr President, has approved the implementatiAon of the 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures made up of Supplementary Protection Measures (SPM)… with effect from 1st April 2026.” The ministry noted that the import restrictions target goods coming from countries outside the ECOWAS bloc, forming part of efforts to strengthen trade protection. “The approved SPM, in line with the provision of the ECOWAS CET, comprises… Import Prohibition list (Trade), applicable only to certain goods originating from non-ECOWAS Member States. It consists of 17 items,” the circular stated. Annex III of the document lists the affected goods, which include poultry (live, frozen or processed), pork, beef and other meat products such as carcasses and offal; eggs except those meant for breeding or research; refined vegetable oils (excluding linseed, castor and olive oil); packaged sugar; cocoa products; tomatoes in all forms; and non-alcoholic beverages with sweeteners. Other items on the list are bagged cement, various medicaments and pharmaceutical waste, fertilisers containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, soaps and detergents, paper and carton materials, large glass bottles, certain steel products, as well as ballpoint pens and related parts. Additionally, the circular introduced an Import Adjustment Tax covering 192 tariff lines, with a plan for gradual removal in line with Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area. It stated, “With effect from January 2027, all Import Adjustment Taxes except for products on the African Continental Free Trade Area 3 per cent list, shall be gradually reduced on an annual basis until full elimination to 0 per cent by 2036.” The government also disclosed that new excise duties, including a green tax, will commence on July 1, 2026, with a 90-day grace period granted for compliance. “A grace period of ninety (90) days commencing from the date of this circular is hereby granted to all importers, manufacturers, and service providers before the implementation of the new excise duty rates,” it added. It further clarified that goods backed by valid import documentation before April 1, 2026, could be cleared under the previous rules within the grace period, while transactions initiated after that date would be subject to the new regime.
