@olivertraldi by the way Lattimore uses "straining" instead of "yearning". That's your big complaint you little bitch?
English

This is actually a great example of the translation's perspective. Wilson removes Achilles's "godlike" modifier and uses the psychologizing "yearned" (compare other translations: "charioteering on", "pressed on"). She calls his hands "lethal" (compare "strong", "all-conquering").
Paul McLeod@pdmcleod
Part of what's silly about the Emily Wilson fuss is people on twitter talk as if her Homer translations have the Greeks all go to therapy and work out their differences over cups of soy ambrosia and then you actually read her verse and it's metal as hell
English

@johnbyronkuhner @olivertraldi no other translator in history has ever had any kind of perspective they were coming from!
English

@olivertraldi Fair enough. Yes she has a perspective and yes she is not shy about proclaiming it. Overall though you know exactly what author you're reading, what book you're reading, and where you are in that book, because it's very like other versions.
English

@johnbyronkuhner @olivertraldi you agree with Oliver that the word "yearning" suggests some kind of political agenda? because that is the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard
English

@soblackandblue @veidt_comrade @olivertraldi and I'm sure you have lots of examples in this 24 book translation of where she portrays Homer thusly? no you don't, because it's not true and also you've never read it. so shut the fk up
English

@veidt_comrade @olivertraldi That's quite the non sequitur. I was commenting mainly on how her text happens to protray Homer as a fan of modern critical gender theory.
English

@olivertraldi @johnbyronkuhner You will never admit that your issues with Wilson are all political, culture war bullshit. You don't like that she has tattoos or whatever. Just stop being a fucking phony about it
English

@olivertraldi @johnbyronkuhner You're a fatuous idiot. She uses the godlike epithet literally all the time. She may drop it here and there for metrical reasons which is of course completely in line with any other verse translation.
English

@GoldBoxRPGGuy @RealNoQuarter This *is* the Iliad lmao. Enjoy your day.
English

@olivertraldi lmfao it's almost comic. this is such an obviously fantastic passage of translation by any conceivable metric and the stretching you're doing to criticize it is pathetic.
English

@RealNoQuarter @olivertraldi it's as legitimate as any other translation and the fuss about it is so overblown.
That said, her Iliad is even better because she dropped the line for line constraint.
English

@olivertraldi I don’t really have a problem with it existing as an alternative translation, but it shouldn’t be treated as authoritative.
English

@DrewPavlou So what? At least she's not a nazi sack of garbage like you

Lupita Nyong'o: “I really had no idea what The Odyssey was”

The most concerning thing about her imo is that she had no idea what The Odyssey was elle.com/culture/movies…

I just finished watching A New Hope.. if I am entirely honest that was the first time I watched it all the way through. I caught basically both halves before but never sat down to watch it all at once.
A few notes.
1. Feels like nobody really treats the Rebels like they're treated here, like damn this was an actual army, uniformed soldiers with real ships and such. After years and years of Star Wars Rebels, Rogue One, Andor, etc. where it feels like they're all just partisans, it's odd.
2. This is a very funny movie, funnier than I remember it being. Han menacing Luke about Leia later in the film had me dying.
3. It can be very cheesy, but it was a fantastic film. Reaffirming my beliefs that people who say Star Wars was always slop or something of the sort are full of it.

@aaditks @Cantrushit which pedos are you referring to exactly

@Cantrushit Boomers: "And I'm gonna vote for the pedos in the election next. "

Boomers five years ago: “I DO NOT CONSENT TO MY IMAGE OR POSTS BEING USED BY MARK ZUCKERBERG FOR META, FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, OR WHATSAPP TO SELL MY DATA. Like and share if you agree!”

@ijustshotamovie I'm so glad someone said it. These guys create the very conditions for the crime that claim to prevent, which never would have happened without their involvement in the first place. Morallyb dubious

And gravitating with it to this ground,
Which, he once heard, was proper to grow wise in,
