In March 1968 the Polish government launched a campaign to expel its Jews. The pretext was anti-imperialism. The 1967 Six-Day War had embarrassed the Soviet bloc, whose Arab clients had been humiliated by Israel in six days, and Moscow's response was to declare Zionism a form of imperialism, a tool of American power, a threat to the international working class. Jews were dismissed from everything, universities, ministries, the army, the press. Investigations were opened into the loyalty of Jewish officials. Approximately 15,000 Jews left. They went to Israel, to Sweden, to Denmark, to the United States, to wherever would have them. They left a country in which their grandparents had been murdered twenty-three years earlier, In 1933 it was racial science. In 1968 it was anti-imperialism. In 2026 it is anti-zionism. Each generation of Jew-haters discovers a vocabulary and persuades itself that the new vocabulary is genuinely different from the old one, and uses the new vocabulary to do exactly what the old one did.

The violent attack at Congregation Chasedei Bobov was a disgusting antisemitic hate crime. I want to thank Toronto Police for making a swift arrest. I also want to thank the congregation for welcoming me today and giving me the space to listen. Toronto is a city where everyone must be free to practice their faith and live without fear. An attack on one community is an attack on all of us. We all have a responsibility to stand against hate and I will always stand with Toronto’s Jewish community.

A school in Mississauga— just outside Toronto — has been covered with antisemitic graffiti. Everything from the Epstein files to libels about Israel killing kids, can be seen spray painted on the building and surrounding sidewalk. Just another day in Canada.
