This style of hedging is aptly named "GOON BREN" (Bodmin Moor), despite being a style found right across Kernow.

The grounders at Kerdroya were all laid by one branch of the family, while the entire stash of granite was supplied by another, just 2 miles away from site. Their great-grandpa was born at Menaridden, now submerged beneath Colliford Lake. He had 7 sons, all of whom were hedgers!

It is very appropriate to have granite provided by the Bettisons, a well-known family of traditional Cornish Hedgers on Bodmin Moor, to celebrate the Bodmin Moor section of the @Cornwall_NL at Kerdroya.

Each section of our labyrinth celebrates a different part of the @Cornwall_NL, and this one represents Carnewas to Stepper Point. All stones are pitched vertically but standardised in height, creating neat horizontal courses of uniform size.

Maintaining the right batter whilst working around a curve is the challenge (expertly demonstrated by our Guild of Cornish Hedgers member, Ryan Ibbotson).

Look at this lovely stretch of "JAKKA HA JENNA" / Jack & Jenny style Cornish hedging at Kerdroya. When the slates are quite thin and would snap if laid horizontal, extra strength is obtained by laying in this ‘herring-bone’ style.

As you can see from this photo, we're getting there! The labyrinth will be accessible for the public to see what we've been up to in Autumn 2024.

This is the easiest style to build and can be seen along all the new stretches of the A30. We’ve built it with stone generously donated by Callywith Quarry, to celebrate the Camel Estuary section of the @Cornwall_NL

This "SKWIR" / Standard stretch of Cornish hedging at Kerdroya is one of the most common and widespread styles. Especially now that stone is brought into any part of Cornwall from one of the few remaining commercial quarries.

We thought that serpentine would be almost impossible to source, but James came up trumps and allowed us to plunder his stash of this precious stone, named for its mottled, scaly, green skin!

This style can be found right across Kernow. Made with serpentine stone generously donated by James Richards at Bruggan Farm, Ruan Minor, large grounders are filled in with random courses up to a line. Above the line, 3 courses of vertical 'pitchers' diminish slightly in size.

Kerdroya, the Cornish landscape labyrinth, is made up of 12 stretches of Cornish hedging, each reflecting distinct hedging styles from across Kernow. This "GOON BREN" / Bodmin Moor style stretch celebrates the South Coast Western section of the @Cornwall_NL.
