@ReReadingWolfe Haven’t read Burroughs, but the pulp writers should not be dismissed on literary merit. Clark Ashton Smith was certainly a greater prose stylist than Tolkien.

ER Burroughs is foundationally important to SF and Fantasy. But he’s not a marginally better writer than Tolkien — let alone an exponentially better writer.

Edgar Rice Burroughs was the Gold Standard of fantasy fiction from the Great War to the 1960s; then JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings was ‘discovered,’ and he became the Gold Standard. But, I think that Burroughs just might’ve been the exponentially better writer…
