Outside of Academia

It's interesting to be how even though I haven't really tweeted in a while I still get be followers every now and then. First: welcome. Secondly I wonder if this reflects how hard to find info about transitioning careers can still be. Clinging to straws and all that.

Me: I’m working on a paper from (for) my previous job. Sister: Oh, do you get extra pay for that? Me: Ehm… No (*confused laughter*). Me later: Why don’t I get paid for this?? Academia is broken at so many levels #AcademicTwitter

@FlyBehaviour I am just really thankful someone at a recruitment event told us 'you can break even so make sure you get a funding package'. But I feel like funding for grad school is part of the hidden curriculum bc I knew lots of people who ended up in unfunded research programs.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the ‘hidden curriculum’ of #academia. The jargon, expectations, and insider info that can put students (esp #FirstGen) at a disadvantage. So #AcademicTwitter what did it seem like others knew and you didn’t when you came to University?

I wish more students would actually ask this because it's an excellent question. "What can you do for me?". Brilliant. Never work for someone who takes it as granted that you obviously will want to work for THEM. Both parties should be happy with the agreement to work together.

Please no more threads about how awful it is that people are leaving academia/how wonderful your professor career is. The framing of this as a CHOICE is offensive to those of us that have been forced out by adjunctification.

@science_latte When I started I got handed a plan which skills I should learn within 6 months and who is responsible for teaching me. We then had a few meetings in that time frame and checked what was done or if adjustments were needed. Really mind blowing.

Alright, my feed is currently filled with people leaving academia for industry, and I am too curious not to ask ... What sorts of industry jobs are you looking for with Ph.D. in a psychology-related field and why?

And the "success stories" literally sound like "Remember John? He joined a great lab and moved with his family. His parents help him with the rent there!".

The pool of friends I made during my PhD that actually managed to stay in Academic research is literally shrinking each day. Just heard of another one who moved in to an administrative role at a University. It's such a weird feeling. #AcademicChatter #LeavingAcademia

@aarit_ahuja If only it was that easy. It's more like "Money, job security, a proper work-life balance, respect, punishing abusers even if they are 'great scientists', ...". Money alone won't cut it.

Leaving academia doesn't mean leaving science. Science in industry is exciting too. Joining a biotech/pharma does not mean your creativity is discouraged, quite the opposite.

@Samweis1900 Academia is always weirdly pseudo-supportive and cult-like at the same time. I hope you'll find time to recover, your health isn't worth any type of career. Thanks for sharing.

Additional thought: I appreciate that my colleague believes in me and thinks I’m doing great work & that I could build a career. Like, that’s cool. But even when saying that I haven’t been doing great mentally she just said that that’s not a reason and I don’t think that’s true

TW suicide and self harm I’ve been working in academia for 6 years now & it has brought me to my mental & physical limits. There were times the work stress made me not only want to leave the uni by but also this world.

And now I finally took the decision to not continue my contract and leave academia once it runs out. When telling my colleagues they didn’t understand. They said that I should give it all a chance and that I’ve come so far. Further than most others
