@NickSotS My undergrad was like that too. I got my bachelors in music ed! And I appreciated it greatly! But yeah....don't get me started on music degrees I have MANY thoughts

@GoofyEuph My university is a band director factory lmao, and I've seen SO many join the music ed program to do just that, only to wind up as an electronic producer, an accompanist, a composer/arranger, or anywhere in-between. Music is such a multi-faceted art, that it can be hard to focus.

If you want to be successful, music has to be an obsession. It really does. "What's the point of being a musician if you dread picking up the horn, if you feel nothing when you perform?" If you are OBSESSED with music those things simply WILL NOT happen.

@NickSotS Oh you are so right! So many people just want to be band directors and don't understand HOW MUCH ELSE goes into the gig! I love teaching, but I can't have that be my entire career!!

@GoofyEuph All of this especially for music education as a career choice as well. In my own experience, a lot of people end up unsure whether their passion lies in their instrument itself, or the act of teaching music to the next generation. I ended up on the instrument side, myself.

If you find yourself feeling those negative feelings (and they're not caused by outside stressors like major health issues) I would genuinely suggest looking into another CAREER. Keep playing. Find something else to make money with. Or you will grow to resent it and yourself.

I have never once dreaded playing. I have never once not wanted to practice (once I figured out HOW to practice) I have never once hated playing the horn. I have never once felt nothing while performing or playing at all for that matter. I am OBSESSED. I LOVE music. MAKING music.

No one wants to drive 2 hours one way to make $100 for one gig

People demand culture in their cities; breweries, live music, art, vendors, small festivals. They deserve the culture. But the people supplying that culture (musicians, artists, service workers) need to be paid enough to live comfortably
